Australian Pink Floyd, Liverpool Echo Arena, 2nd March 2012

Australian Pink Floyd, Liverpool Echo Arena, 2nd March 2012

I had the pleasure of watching the Australian Pink Floyd at The Liverpool Echo Arena on 2nd March 2012. As cover bands go, you can’t really get much better than this.

From a visual perspective, the show is impressive with them having a large circular screen like Pink Floyd use onto which there are various projections and videos. They also use lasers which are always fun and, on this particular tour, they are using lights along the front of the stage as Pink Floyd did on their Division Bell tour. Have a look at this live video of Australian Pink Floyd and see for yourself and see the photo gallery at the bottom of this page! Looking good.

From a sound perspective, they still have it! I saw them perform at Manchester’s MEN Arena a few years ago and they sounded brilliant there. I have to say, with several key members leaving the Aussie Floyd since then to form Brit Floyd, I was a little cautious about whether or not the Aussie Floyd would sound as good anymore. I can confirm they sounded great on the whole and was an enjoyable experience. As cover bands go, you can’t get much better than these guys.

The Australian Pink Floyd have just started their extensive world tour and UK tickets are available as below. Get involved!

A Portugese translation of Pigs Might Fly: The Inside Story Of Pink Floyd by Mark Blake is due for publication in Brazil on 5 March 2012. The book, now titled ‘Nos Bastidores Do Pink Floyd’, is published by Evora and has been rush-released to coincide with Roger Waters’ upcoming tour dates in Argentina and Brazil.

The book is an excellent and evenly handled document of the history of Pink Floyd and is updated to post Syd Barrett’s untimely death. It is an enjoyable read and features opinions gleaned from 100s of interviews with people that have been part of the Pink Floyd history and had friendships with the band over the years.

Mark Blake has interviewed David Gilmour and Roger Waters over the years for various magazine pieces he has written for the likes of MOJO magazine and he has used this first hand knowledge for the book. There are 100s of books available about the history of the band and this is certainly up there in the top three! Schaffners Saucerful of Secrets and Mason’s Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd are my two other favourites.

Pick yourself up a copy! 5/5

Liverpool icon and satirist John Gorman has written and directed the new touring version of Dean Johnson’s Wilfred Owen musical, Bullets And Daffodils.

The ex-Scaffold and Tiswas frontman joins a long line of illustrious contributors such as actor Christopher Timothy and guitar legend David Gilmour. The Pink Floyd guitarist has granted permission for a solo recording to be used as part of the show’s score.

Dean says, “Mr Gilmour wanted to do everything he could do to help and sanctioned the track There’s No Way Out Of Here gratis and waivering the licence and publishing fees, so it was in every sense a donation.”

John Gorman has been on board since day one of this project. He has always been at the vanguard of cutting edge projects.

Commenting on what drew him to the project, Mr Gorman said, “Wilfred Owen died a week before the end of the First World War: the war to end all wars. Owen’s poems demonstrate the gruesome awfulness that happened to these men through no fault of their own. Dean brings to the foreground the message that the war is not a good thing, which I’m behind 100%.”

A special preview of Bullets And Daffodils takes place at Fort Perch Rock, New Brighton on 8 March, and visits The Forum Theatre, Chester on 10 March, and The Citadel, St Helens, on 16 March.

Mark Fisher, who has worked with Pink Floyd over the years on their stage designs, will be designing the stage for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations concert. Mark has also done stages for U2, Robbie Williams and The Rolling Stones.

Below is an artist’s impression of what the stage will look like on the Mall at the Victoria Memorial fountain in front of Buckingham Palace in London, England. The last time Victoria Memorial was as busy as this would be was during Prince William and Kate Middleton’s marriage when the press were camped in front of it ready for the balcony kiss shot! ;-) Looks like it could end up being quite a busy concert with perhaps 500,000 people expected to attend making it one of the biggest events in the UK for some time.
