I've made an attempt at transcription from the Rome gig:

The third verse, 2nd line is particularly difficult (around 4'16"):

Rome June 20, 1971

The Return of the Son of Nothing

(Two) planets meeting face to face
One to the other cried, "How sweet
If endlessly we might embrace
(in) perfect union deep in space

"An [if] Heaven might this once relent
and give us leave to shine as one
Our two lights here forever
one light blent [blended]?"

And in that longing to be one
The parting summons sound is [drawn? drummed?]
"I see you've got to travel on
and on and on around the sun"

Listening to the 05-June-71 concert, on Vierundzwanzig Teile Von Nichts [HRV CDR 029], it sounds like "The parting summons sound is rung", which feels a lot nicer.

And definitely "blended", not "blent" like the original poem.

The source for the original lyrics comes from a poem from Mohammed Iqbal called "Two Planets":

Two planets meeting face to face
One to the other cried 'How sweet
If endlessly we might embrace
And here forever stay! how sweet
If Heaven a little might relent
And leave our light in one light blent!'
But through that longing to dissolve
In one, the parting summons sounded.
Immutably the stars revolve,
By changeless orbits each is bounded;
Eternal union is a dream,
And severance the world's law supreme.

I had no clue that is what the lyrics were taken from, I thought they had been cooked up in-house.

never knew that before, no wonder they had to change it
no Belloc, no Kubrick, no Iqbal

Roger got away with the T'ang poetry for "Set The Controls..." though! What was the Kubrick thing, I haven't heard of that before - what that about Echoes allegedly being written for 2001? Or the Floyd being asked to do "The Shining"?

The Shining came out in 1980, so I'm not sure that would have been on the cards.

I think Kubrick wanted to use sections of Atom Heart Mother in A Clockwork Orange but it didn't work out.

The album cover does make two blink-and-ye-miss-it appearances in the movie though.
