I think the question is "why" rather than "if". It sound like they needed to. But still, very cool.

They probably used to spliff up with a copy of Meddle during rehearsals or something. This is a kindly nod to Pink Floyd, not an out-and-out cover version. Afterall, Metallica will always sell gigs regardless of if they namecheck Pink Floyd or not, the good news is a few Metallica fans might get put onto Floyd as a result.

The main issue is that Hammet didn't use any delay on his slide rig. His raw, distorted sound just doesn't work for the slide parts.

There is either a bit of slapback, or some reverb on there when he goes onto the slide bit.

Its nice of them to let everybody know they dig the Floyd, for me that was the point of doing that little improv on OOTD, they were not trying to do a perfect rendition or even a complete version of it. Funny how there was a moment at the end when it "seemed" like Rob was doing the catholic cross sign, like if he was thinking "GOD I Hope Gilmour don't sue me 'cause of this"

And as a side note, aren't Hammett and Trujillo the nicest, least egotistical of the whole Metallica bunch?

I have no problem with Metallica covering Pink Floyd. I have a problem with Kirk Hammett playing false notes in a relatively easy slide solo.
