Alternate Pink Floyd Albums...

Post by theaussiefloydian »

So here's a thought: what if the singles Pink Floyd recorded were all added to the albums around the time? I'm sure this has been discussed before in the forum, but I'm wondering what would have happened if there were an album in the same timeline as PatGoD and ASfoS. So here are the lineups I would imagine here, based on when the songs were recorded and such:

THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN (mostly unchanged)
A1 - Astronomy Domine
A2 - Lucifer Sam
A3 - Candy And A Currant Bun
A4 - Flaming
A5 - Pow R. Toc H.
A6 - Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk
B1 - Interstellar Overdrive
B2 - The Gnome
B3 - Chapter 24
B4 - The Scarecrow
B5 - Arnold Layne

IN THE BEECHWOODS (my imaginary album)
A1 - Paint Box
A2 - See Emily Play
A3 - Matilda Mother
A4 - In The Beechwoods
A5 - Remember A Day
A6 - Vegetable Man
B1 - Apples And Oranges
B2 - Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
B3 - Scream Thy Last Scream
B4 - Jugband Blues
B5 - Bike

A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS
A1 - Let There Be More Light
A2 - See-Saw
A3 - Careful With That Axe, Eugene
A4 - Corporal Clegg
B1 - A Saucerful of Secrets
B2 - It Would Be So Nice
B3 - Julia Dream
B4 - Point Me At The Sky

Let me know what you think.

Here are two playlists that I made for myself regarding the 1967-1968 period, encompassing first two albums and related singles (I called them "Random Precision 1" and "Random Precision 2"). It could be an alternative version of A Nice Pair. :D

Album 1 (Syd's songs):
01. Astronomy Domine
02. Arnold Layne
03. See Emily Play
04. Flaming
05. Apples and Oranges
06. Bike
07. Candy and a Currant Bun
08. Lucifer Sam
09. Matilda Mother
10. The Gnome
11. Chapter 24
12. Scarecrow
13. Jugband Blues

Album 2 (non-Syd's songs):
01. Let There Be More Light
02. Remember a Day
03. Take up Thy Stethoscope and Walk
04. Paint Box
05. It Would Be So Nice
06. Julia Dream
07. Corporal Clegg
08. See-Saw
09. Point Me at the Sky
10. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun

Resurrecting this old thread of mine because I decided to revisit this idea, but this time I paid careful attention to the recording dates of the singles and the songs on the first two albums, arranged them in recording date order then split them up into individual "albums" from there and rearranged. The result was these tracklists:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (largely unchanged):
A1 - Astronomy Domine (4:12)
A2 - Arnold Layne (2:56)
A3 - Matilda Mother (3:08)
A4 - Flaming (2:46)
A5 - Pow R. Toc H. (4:26)
A6 - Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk (3:05)
(Side A: 20:33)
B1 - Interstellar Overdrive (9:41)
B2 - The Gnome (2:13)
B3 - The Scarecrow (2:11)
B4 - Chapter 24 (3:42)
B5 - Candy and a Currant Bun (2:45)
(Side B: 20:32)

In the Beechwoods:
A1 - See Emily Play (2:54)
A2 - Remember a Day (4:33)
A3 - Lucifer Sam (3:07)
A4 - Apples and Oranges (3:04)
A5 - In the Beechwoods (4:40)
A6 - Paintbox (3:47)
(Side A: 22:05)
B1 - Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (5:28)
B2 - Scream Thy Last Scream (4:42)
B3 - Vegetable Man (2:29)
B4 - Jugband Blues (3:00)
B5 - Bike (3:21)
(Side B: 19:00)

A Saucerful of Secrets:
A1 - Let There Be More Light (5:38)
A2 - It Would Be So Nice (3:46)
A3 - Julia Dream (2:34)
A4 - Careful With That Axe, Eugene (5:45)
A5 - Corporal Clegg (4:13)
(Side A: 21:56)
B1 - A Saucerful of Secrets (11:57)
B2 - See-Saw (4:36)
B3 - Point Me at the Sky (3:40)
(Side B: 20:13)

Actually one that I am really curious about these days is The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking as a Pink Floyd album. It was done in 1978, and presented to the band together with The Wall by Roger (others selected the latter for the next project). Roger dived right into it in 1984, with Eric Clapton as 'the surrogate Dave' on the guitar. We know the results (including surreal decision not to allow Clapton to play and play on it as much as he wants), but how would a Pink Floyd version sound like?

It was planned for Ummagumma, as the band's piece (versus all the individual solo pieces) on the studio part of the album, but it was dropped.
