Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" (1976)

Post by jude_the_obscure »

Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" (1976): I don't know what compelled me to check this CD out at the library, but I was surprised to see alot of connections to Pink Floyd:

- The album was produced by Alan Parsons, who produced "Dark Side OTM."

- The album was recorded at Abbey Road studio, where PF recorded most of their albums.

- The guitarist on this album is Tim Renwick. Renwick went to the same school as Roger Waters and Syd Barrett; he played guitar on Rick Wright's "Broken China"; he played on the two post-Waters PF albums and toured with PF as the 2nd guitarist; he toured w/ Roger Waters during his "Pros and Cons" tour.

- Keyboards are played by Peter Wood, who was also a member of "The Bleeding Hearts Band" which played "The Wall" tours in '80-'81.

- Album design is by Hipgnosis, Storm Thorgerson's company which got its start by designing PF albums (incl. DSOTM and WYWH); Thorgerson went to school with PF members.

So, some might want to go back and listen to this album again. I'm not sure it's "Floydian," but, listening to this album for the first time, I like it alot so far.

His next album, 1978's "Time Passages," has a similar sound and features all of those mentioned above, but it was apparently recorded in LA; and based on my listening so far, sounds slightly weaker than "Year of the Cat." 1975's "Modern Times" also features all the same collaborators, and is rated high at AMG, but I haven't had a chance to hear it yet.

And also played with Floyds on The Division Bell :)

I've always thought that this sounds a bit Floydy.

Not all of Canadian band Black Mountain's music sounds like Pink Floyd, but they certainly are an influence on some of their songs. This is one of my favourites, from their fourth album released a little earlier this year.
It's called 'Space to Bakersfield'.

Some of the songs on this album sound similar to the earlier Floyd stuff.
