In 1954, a new type of guitar was introduced to the music-playing public of America. The Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company had developed the first commercial solid-body Spanish electric guitar – the Telecaster – a simple design which was successful, but with which many players chose to use with a ‘Bigsby’ unit, a fairly primitive spring-loaded vibrato device with which players could bend notes up and down. Instead of adding a Bigsby, Leo Fender produced a new, more expensively-made ash or alder line of guitars with his own design of vibrato, and a musical legend was born.

In the autumn of 2004, some of the world’s greatest guitarists gathered at Wembley Arena to celebrate the 50th birthday of the extraordinarily popular instrument. Members of Queen, Genesis, Thin Lizzy, The Crickets, The Shadows, Free, The Eagles, Roxy Music, Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones plus solo stars Albert Lee, Jamie Cullum, Theresa Andersson, Amy Winehouse and Paul Carrack all gathered on one stage for what was without doubt the greatest modern guitar concert ever.
