A Momentary Lapse of Reason: The Battle for Saunton Sands

In a striking demonstration inspired by Pink Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason, campaigners gathered at Saunton Sands to protest plans for an electricity cable connecting an offshore wind farm to the mainland. The Save Our Sands group, led by Helen Cooper, argues that the cable route threatens the natural beauty and ecology of the area, which once served as the backdrop for Pink Floyd’s iconic album cover.

Despite receiving over 1,800 objections, North Devon Council approved the proposal, persuaded by promises of economic growth and renewable energy expansion. White Cross offshore wind farm aims to install seven floating turbines 30 miles off the coast, with the cable running under Braunton Burrows and across the Taw Estuary to a new substation.

While supporters highlight the £153m investment and job creation, opponents fear irreversible environmental damage and disruption to tourism. With £895 raised in 24 hours to fund the protest, the campaigners remain determined to make their voices heard. As Ms Cooper puts it, “If this can be approved in this area, nowhere is safe.”
