David Gilmour in MOJO Magazine; New 2025 Album?

David Gilmour MOJO Magazine, with feature on the front cover, is out on 17th September 2024. The magazine promises “an in-depth audience with David Gilmour, the stentorian voice and stellar guitar of Pink Floyd. His new album, his greatest moments, a tantalising future, the spat with Roger, the lot!”.

In a photo from 2nd August 2024 David Gilmour can be seen enjoying an ice-cream on the Thames in his rowboat close to his recording studio houseboat called Astoria. His new album, luck and strange, was mixed here having been recorded in several studios as documented in the recent edition of Rockonteurs podcast featuring David Gilmour.

The cover shows a photo of David which many have commented on “the internet” makes him look rather cross about something. People have speculated about what exactly has made him look this way. It will be interesting to read what the magazine calls “the definitive interview… complete anarchic madness” written by long time Pink Floyd writer Mark Blake, author of the excellent book Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd by Mark Blake.

Another New David Gilmour Album in 2025?

In the MOJO article David probably talks about the follow up album to Luck and Strange which he has talked about in the past and is quoted by MOJO as saying, “I’ve got a trove of stuff already”. Watch this space! We remember of course that David was featured in last month’s MOJO where they reviewed his new album giving it a solid 4 stars. Looking forward in the calendar to the tour, David will start touring from 27th September until the end of the year so presumably the new David Gilmour album will be recorded in 2025 and possibly out in the same year too?

David Gilmour Demo Recording Minidisc vs Pro Tools

It sounds like he has lots of material to choose from having recorded quite an archive over the years. David is a particular fan of Pro Tools recording software because it lets him capture the essence of his new songs and rework them without deviating from the original spark he captured in the recording by being able to add layers of new tracks on top. This contrasts to recording something on something like a minidisc recorder, popular in the 90s, where he would capture guitar and vocals at the same time which cannot then be mixed separately later on unless you use modern AI software of course to split out the tracks separately, something similar to when A Saucerful of Secrets surprised everyone by making a Syd Barrett backing track where Syd “sang” with the band in a live setting on their last tour.

The fact David recorded Sings a long time ago on Minidisc and used a snippet towards the end of the song on his new album means he is happy to now use what many would consider an inferior recording. David has always strived for high quality autophile-friendly recordings in the past which probably slows down the creative process and makes making a new album less fun and less spontaneous. I guess we have younger producer Charlie Andrew to that for bringing a grittier process. Bring on the new album!
