Aretha and Kurt Cobain? Nah, that can't possibly be true.

R
When was that? Probaly in the early days or they said it sarcastically 'cause they've been known to get a bit techty about the PF comparison.
I once read an interview, back in 2000 or so, where they said that early Floyd (More, Ummagumma et al) was a bigger influence for them than the post DSOTM material, and that they were listening all the time to that while recording either OK Computer or Kid A, don't remember which exactly.

Yes, especially the former (key) members, drummer Mike Portnoy and keyboardist Kevin Moore.
Besides including an occasional Pink Floyd song in their set, Dream Theater have also played "Dark Side Of The Moon" in entirety numerous times. Also, their version of their own song "Peruvian Skies" on their 1998 live album "Once In A Live Time" features a cameo appearence of the keyboard melody from "Have A Cigar".

I'm sure Phish has rolled out at least one boring uninspired and insipid Floyd cover live, much as Dream Theatre have. DT are such a terminally boring band....

Although I'm quite a fan of their material recorded before 1998, I completely agree with this. All of their albums after 1998 (except for a handful of songs) are just boring collages of other people's music linked with aggressive and uninspired overdoing of solos.

Back to topic, "High Hopes" has also been covered by Finnish goth metal band Nightwish. Although it's not a spectacular cover, it was interesting enough for me to want to hear it more than once, which I couldn't say for Queensryche's version of "Welcome To The Machine".

Freddie Mercury was a huge fan of the Floyd. He often listened to their albums in his limo, but I don't know if he had a favourite.

That can't be too far away from the end for Freddie. I wonder when it was taken. Anyone know?

The beginning of 1991 - less than a year before he died.

1. Why not?
2. Seems kind of fitting.
