Q&A With Pink Floyd's Bass Player Guy Pratt - Your Questions

Post by Keith Jordan »

Guy Pratt, the bass player for Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, has kindly agreed to do a "Questions and Answers" session with NPF site visitors. That means you can ask him a question!

Guy, who is currently doing a comedy tour called Breakfast of Idiots in Australia, has played bass for and with many famous artists.

He has worked with Pink Floyd, Echo & The Bunnymen, Kirsty MacColl, The Smiths, Tears For Fears, Lemon Jelly, The Orb, All Saints, Icehouse, Madonna, Stephen Duffy, Robbie Robertson, Roxy Music, Michael Jackson, Gary Moore, Robert Palmer, Billy Pilgrim, A.R. Rahman,Womack & Womack, Coverdale Page and Toy Matinee.

He is a member of The Transit Kings with Alex Paterson (of The Orb), Jimmy Cauty (of The KLF), and Dominic Beken. Cauty and Pratt also released "I Wanna 1-2-1 With You" as Solid Gold Chartbusters. Since 2006, Guy Pratt has been playing bass for Bryan Ferry and is currently accompanying him on his solo tour throughout Europe.

Were you told to primarily stick with the original bass parts or were you encouraged to bring your own stuff to the table?

Do you appreciate your surname?

How did you come to write the original soundtrack for the television show 'Spaced'?

Is it true that staring too long at Scott Page's mullet can make you go blind?

Okay, maybe not... ;)

I think this question might be on all of our minds...

Before Richard Wright's tragic death, it was announced that he was working on a new solo album. Were you involved in it, and do you know how much of it was done and if it will ever be released posthumously?

EDIT:

I have another question that's probably appropriate at this point in time.

The liner notes for Michael Jackson's 1995 album "HIStory" state that you played bass on it, but does not specify which songs. Could you shed some light on that? Also, did you meet Michael during that time?

[-D-] Hello Guy,
My question is, What difference do you get in the sound of the bass guitar, versus the stand up bass. Is it for instance, stand up for a blues type of number and back to guitar for a standard or rock number ?
Thankyou ...Jayne

I've seen your name associated with The Dream Academy. Did you play on "Life In A Northern Town?"

My question(s) for Guy

Who is your favourite bass player? and
Who from all the people you have worked with came up with the most challenging basslines to play.

Have just ordered the book and am looking forward to reading it!
