Requiem for the Post-War Dream - A Mashup of TFC and AMLOR

Post by Vegetable Layne »

Hello. I'm a new member here, and thought I'd start off with a little creative project I undertook. As we all know, the 80's is the most critically savaged period of the band's history - many don't like The Final Cut because it simply doesn't sound Floyd-ian enough, and because its basically a Roger Waters solo album in disguise, while others don't like A Momentary Lapse of Reason for its substantial reliance on style over substance and for its big attendance of session players - including Rick Wright himself!

I thought about it, and considered that almost all songs of AMLOR would gain in stature if they were featured in TFC. Similarly, if TFC had allowed Gilmour to breathe in and bring in some signature melodies, it would probably had fared better. So what I did was experiment, first by putting the songs together in a rough manner in YT and then actually doing a compilation myself.

After trial and error, I've discovered that these two albums, being borne of the 80's, would've actually worked well together as one double album. In fact, almost all tracks of AMLOR fit well with TFC's narrative, adding to the texture and allowing breathing room for the listener to take in Waters' bleakness.

The track list I've come down with is as follows:

Side 1:
1. Signs of Life
2. The Post War Dream
3. Your Possible Pasts
4. One of the Few
5. When The Tigers Broke Free
6. Terminal Frost

Side 2:
7. The Hero's Return Pt. 1
8. The Gunner's Dream
8. The Hero's Return Pt. 2
10. Paranoid Eyes
11. On the Turning Away

Side 3:
12. Learning to Fly
13. Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert
14. The Fletcher Memorial Home
15. Southampton Dock
16. The Final Cut
17. Not Now John

Side 4:
18. Yet Another Movie
19. Round and Around
20. Nobody Lives Forever (A New Machine Parts I & II combined)
21. Sorrow
22. Two Suns in the Sunset

Its quite ride, I tell you. What do you think?

I'll certainly see how such a thing would sound and get back to you. I do like how you blended both albums together.

It's an interesting concept, but I don't think you'd get any support for that from Roger or David

I doubt I would. But that won't stop me from enjoying this experiment or sharing it with other fans, will it?

I like the idea and in term of concept it works...

But those 2 albums are full of fillers, so I can't imagine a double album like that... However if you could just take best songs to make a shorter record, could be good.

Glad I came across this as I had been looking for a playlist idea for both albums. I like to try different views for the albums and these two had escaped me previously. It is a great way of listening to these two but I prefer an LP length list so I am working on whittling it down. Firstly I dropped all the tracks that I have included on my Wall extended playlist (such as Tigers, my Possible Pasts etc.), then excluded Learning to Fly as it is at least partly about Dave taking over the band and a couple of others. If it works I will post the final list.

Happy with my first go:

Side 1:
1. Signs of Life
2. The Post War Dream
3. One of the Few (my original inclusion of Your Possible Pasts was an editing mistake)
4. Terminal Frost
5. Paranoid Eyes
6. On the Turning Away
7. Southampton Dock

Side 2:
8. Yet Another Movie
9. Round and Around
10. Nobody Lives Forever (A New Machine Parts I & II combined)
11. Not Now John
12. Sorrow
13. Two Suns in the Sunset

This comes out at 56 minutes so, if pressed, I would edit down Terminal Frost and Yet Another Movie.

It keeps the overall message of TFC without sounding like an extension of The Wall and adds a hefty dose of Gilmour. Sadly of course there is still nowhere near enough Rick. I am not a fan of TFC as an album as I find it too samey - this mashup allows Roger's poetry to stand out.

Now there's an album I would like to hear.

A little off-topic, but I'd rather segue AMLOR and TDB, leaving out about half of each.

Side A

Signs Of Life
Keep Talking
Learning To Fly
Wearing The Inside Out
On The Turning Away

Side B

Dogs Of War
What Do You Want From Me?
Marooned
One Slip
High Hopes

Perhaps the title would be Reason Of Division.

I will give that a try, though I like the Division Bell mixed with the Endless River.

I have now acquired a copy of Zee Identity so I am going to see if I can add some more Rick to my mashup.
