I had never heard of him before a (different) Facebook friend posted one of his videos on his Wall. Very impressive playing indeed. But since I didn't know him, I didn't rate him high or low... or anything at all.
Not knowing a guitar player isn't the same as underrating him/her.

True, I was undecided whether to include him or not. He really belongs in a 'best guitarist you may never have heard of' thread :D

Hard to say, as I may have never heard of lots of other guitarists too; so they may be much better.

Mike Oldfield
He should be among the 100 best guitarists in Rolling Stone chart, simply isn't because of it's music and this is not fair.

Mike Oldfield is an incredible guitarist. I'd say his performances on "Amarok" were his peak. Incredible stuff.

I'll also mention Allan Holdsworth here. Not that he's necessarily underrated, since he has an incredibly rabid following, but rather because he's always been widely unknown by the majority of the popular music industry. The music he made was so non-commercial and hard to digest for the average listener, most people don't know that his abilities on guitar were nearly limitless.

Roy Buchanan was the subject of a PBS documentary in 1971 that got him a lot of attention, including an offer to join the Rolling Stones. He was very well known throughout the '70s, and stuck to a touring schedule that he followed year after year, so his shows became an annual event at each venue. Gilmour reached out when they were both touring Australia in 1988 and they jammed with the Pink Floyd touring musicians at a small venue Buchanan had played the night before. Roy died six months later.

Aaaaaaaa I was just about to say Buchanan. Hung out with his son in Springfield years back. He gave me two bootleg concert cd's. Buchanan was kickass but a disturbed individual. He was mean to his family and wound up hanging himself in jail or somewhere, at least that's what his son told me. But, helluva guitarist.

Anne Clarke aka St Vincent is quite good when she goes for it - certainly better than the over hyped and over rated Jonny Marr

I would say Frank Bornemann of Eloy is highly underrated.

Three great and highly underrated Aussie blues guitarists: Geoff Achison, Dave Hole and Shane Pacey.
