I downloaded Voyage of the Acolyte and Spectral Mornings this month, and both albums blew me away. Musically in pair quality with the Floyd, his Genesis and King Crimson, each of those 2 albums are incredible, and creative.
I once thought the main force of Genesis was Peter Gabriel, and now i discovered that there's not Gabriel or Collins Genesis, in fact, there are with Hackett/without Hackett Genesis.
He is my guitar idol now.
About the albums, VOA is very epic, symphonic and has an atmosphere no other album got me into. And Spectral Mornings has his best guitar solo on Every Day, and has a more modern feel instead of the pure 70's VOA.
I'll look forward to that album where he plays Genesis songs, "Revisited", it must be greaT!

I like both these albums. Actually I think the main change in Genesis came when Banks eventually surrendered his art-rock material to the pop inclinations of Rutherford and Collins after And Then There Were Three, which still has the sound of the previous two albums and Rutherford does very well here on guitar.

Re: Steve Hackett's solo career
Hey, it has been a while since I brought back an OLD thread. Why start a new one, when the topic already exists.
So, I will be listening to my first Steve Hackett album tonight (why not start with his first solo album?): Voyage of the Acolyte (w/ bonus tracks) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyage_of_the_Acolyte
Not sure why I never explored his solo albums before. I hear the first four are really good, then the 80s are not so great, but he has been producing pretty good work again at some point - very prolific guy (24 solo albums?) and all over the place.
I have been reading about him lately on the interwebbies...from what I gather, people have more respect for his solo work than the two most recognizable other solo guys from Genesis...can't wait to find out. I keep reading Spectral Mornings is his masterpiece.
Thoughts on later works? I hear some of the 00s and 10s albums are pretty fine (not interested in the Genesis Revisited stuff right now, as I want new experiences).
EDIT: oldhippy is in this thread!!!

I liked that one, but it has been a long time since I heard it last. I never really cared much about his other albums though. I really think I should give some of them another try.nosaj wrote:So, I will be listening to my first Steve Hackett album tonight (why not start with his first solo album?): Voyage of the Acolyte

Re: Steve Hackett's solo career
Hudini, I love the hat!!!
I listened to Voyage of the Acolyte last night. Not bad at all. Prog! The only thing I am challenged by is the last song with the woman singing. It may take a few listens to see if I can deal with her style of singing.
Based on reviews I have read, I might pick up Spectral Mornings.

Re: Steve Hackett's solo career
I bought a copy of Voyage of the Acolyte. It is probably in my top 10 albums right now. Steve Hackett was probably domineered by Tony Banks in the 'classic' Genesis period, lending him a slightly stiff musical style and an unwillingness to cult loose as a guitarist, so it is nice to hear what he brought to the table when the project was truly his for the taking.

Re: Steve Hackett's solo career
On the other hand, Genesis was never as playful and progressive as while Hackett was in the band. People usually divide Genesis' output into "Gabriel era" and "Collins era", but I never really liked any of their albums recorded without Hackett. And after he left the band they reverted back to being a pop-rock band occasionally dabbling into progressive territories.

Re: Steve Hackett's solo career
I've always liked Steve's guitar playing on the Genesis albums so when I found a copy of "Highly Strung" for 2 dollars a couple of years ago I immediatly bought it. Then I listened to it once, understood why they sold it for 2 bucks and never play it again.
