There are lots of drummers who write music for their bands in jazz.

that is true i cant believe i forgot a whole genre... all im saying though is in a conventional rock band the drummer rarely writes anything

That's because they rarely need to know anything more than how to play a simple 4/4 beat.

Robert Wyatt is the only drummer/songwriter that I care about.

PC - after Gabriel's departure and up to We Can't Dance an probably present, co-wrote ~all songs of the 1981-1991 era, or writes a bunch solely.
DG - only wrote 1 song, Marigold, for Nirvana, but is the chief songwriter in later outings.
CP - co-wrote ~all songs for Rainbow in late 70s.
