My latest build, the David Gilmour Black Strat

Post by blackstratfan »

Well, after many hours of hard work, here's my latest finished guitar. A heavily Gilmour inspired Black Strat. It plays absolutely fantastic, despite using the same neck profiles for all my builds this one for some reason seems to be a little more faster. Like the original I did do a sunburst under the black Nitro and slowly wore it away to reveal the bursting underneath. So Gilmour fans, what do you think?

The pickguard and the neck should be "worn out" more, the finish on the body needs to be more polished and worned.
I'm impressed with your other guitars, but not with this one.

Aging maple necks is a funny business. Fender sprayed nitro on the fretboards, it yellowed, then it wore away. The contrast between the nitro and the worn areas are a bit stark on the build here, but Kelton Swade, Bill Nash (et al) don't get this bit right either.

The chrome hardware needs dulled slightly, and the pickguard is maybe the most obvious offender. Gilmour's original pickguard is an oddity. It arrived on the guitar in the mid '70s, before aftermarket parts really grew into their own, with Mighty Mite and Schecter crafting parts that fitted Fender instruments. Therefore I guess he had a luthier make the pickguard as a custom job. Having played a Custom Shop Gilmour Strat, the route around the neck on the Fender CS model is completely mismatching, with the pickguard describing a squarer profile around the heel of the neck, revealing the paint of the body below. Also, the bevel on the guard is different, being rounder and shinier than a generic single-ply pickguard.

All of this amounts to nothing. I build Telecaster parts guitars and the routing I do on them to make things work would make you cry. Your guitar looks great, and no doubt sounds excellent. I like the black nitro finish as it appears to sink into the grain like a 'real' one would, and the routed and blocked Kahler trem area behind the bridge is a wonderful attention to detail.
