Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking cover

Post by cymbaline212 »

my vinyl sleeve of this album has the ass covered with a black bar and have seen several other covers for the album without the censor and was wondering if there was any sort of debate or anything by the record company in releasing it with the ass uncovered

Is this not a US vs. Rest of World issue? I'm tempted to say that the US censored the cover. Most (perhaps not all) other countries didn't.

Or have I heard wrong?

im not sure. i myself think its up to the record stores, much like how some record stores chose to stock "clean" cds with the swears silenced out. some record stores probably chose to use the censored cover while some go with ass cover. its usually up to the stores to chose depending on their family orientation. i dont often see censored album covers in the records store around my area...but i havent looked for the pros and cons. ill be sure to look out and see what it looks like next time i shop.

this issue always bothered me. I had a cassette version in the 80s that didn't have the bar, but every other version I've seen here in the US has been censored.

It's typical of this country though. And it really cracked me up with bowie's tin machine released that album with the statue of david on the cover, which of course was censored in America. Seems that even priceless, ancient art is considered "pornographic" here. What a joke

Just checked Cym and my Canadian Pros and Cons CD cover has the arse covered. I do seem to remember an LP original I had of Pros and Cons where the arse was not covered.

My American CBS Pros and Cons pressing is quite assless. It's funny how amazingly explicit rappers can go uncensored but when Roger Waters does "What God Wants" or has a woman's buttocks on an album cover people get riled up.

Ass /Arse is Censored in the USA .I've never seen a version from any European country censored.I even saw Posters in the London underground with the uncensored cover. It's something to do with the PMRC in the USA which was fronted by Tipper Gore .The extreme pressure on records stores in the USA by local government and the PMRC meant they had to stupid stuff like that or lose the permit to trade and run a store ,So record companies didn't dare risk anything that would jeopordize store owners business .The best place to hear about how bad it was in the 80's and early 90's is to listen to a Jello Biafra Spoken word album like High Priest of Harmful matter (tales from the Trial).Even Large stores like Wal-Mart won't carry any records with dodgy covers .So it's going to cut into the record companies profit because Wal-Mart is the biggest retail company in the USA.Land of the free indeed.

From memory, my LP was uncensored but I had a cassette and on that the girl was wearing a pair of red bikini pants.

Apparently the girl on the cover was Linzi Drew.

From Wikipedia,

Linzi Drew (born 1959 in Bristol) is an English glamour model and actress. She is a former Page Three girl. In her wide and varied career, she has appeared in many films, videos and magazine pictorials. She has appeared in three Ken Russell films, including taking the starring role in Russell's segment of the film Aria, and was at one time the editor of the British edition of Penthouse magazine. now also directs and produces films.

She is the long-term partner of the British porn star and director Steve Perry. She retired as an actress at the age of 41 to start a family.

She published an autobiography, Incest and Morris Dancing in 1993; the title is a reference to the famous quote "You should try everything once except incest and morris dancing", which has been attributed to numerous people including Thomas Beecham and Arnold Bax.

She appeared on the cover of the 1984 concept album The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking by Roger Waters, the former bassist and vocalist for progressive rock band Pink Floyd. This caused some controversy, due to her being nude.
