Should Roger's Next Album be a Concept Album?

Post by nosaj »

On another site, there was a debate about this - some suggested the lack of a coheirent concept was holding up any new album and just wanted a collection of songs.

I think he should make a concept album.

I don't think he knows how to do an album any other way. It's been a long time since he did an album that was just a collection of songs.

I think he looks at the album as one long song sort of, so I think that's more of his natural writing environment. A lot of the time the sum of the parts of his albums is better than the individual songs IMHO...I love Amused To Death but there's no single song I play over and over. To do an album of individual unrelated songs would mean he has to give each one a hook or something more "poppy" to make them stand out on their own, which seems to be the opposite of what he's done before and is probably unnecessary....

It's not whether he should or shouldn't... We all know he will if he issues another one.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! (mind you, I doubt he'll ever be broke-just less wealthy!)

Doesn't matter as long as he brings out something that's good (i.e. better than Pros & Cons/Radio Kaos) and isn't an Opera

I've been sitting here, struggling to construe a coherent arguement for one case or the other.....then I realised the question involved the word 'concePt', not 'conceRt'....shit, back to the drawing board!

Any kind of album (except for opera) would be fine with me. However, if he does do a concept album, I hope he remembers that the music is no less important than the concept. With "Amused To Death", I think the music suffered by being of only secondary importance. Same goes for the musically dull "Each Small Candle", "Leaving Beirut" and "To Kill The Child".

I would be very disappointed if he didn't. I always view concepts at least half a mile above random songs.

no he should put it out already and get started on the next one
Amused to Death wasnt that tight of a concept album, more like a collection of editorials on current events that overlapped here and there
and if he really cant release this alleged new album til its perfect, he should put out a "Roger Waters Notebooks" series of demos and abandoned experiments, sorta like Pete Townshends Scoop albums except Roger'd have all these soundcollages and hilarious cussfilled rants
