Great trilogy of songs.

I like part 2 and 3 quite a bit.

I quite like part 3 though not a fan of parts 1 or 2 - find them totally overblown. Actually being that part 3 sounds nothing like the other parts its kind of weird to see it marked in to the same set of songs considering it doesn't so much as share the chorus of structure with the others

It shares a lot, the same chord structure, melody and the greatest solo ever played...

From what I can recall Part 3 is one of the strongest pieces in the whole set, and yes it is basically a slow down "instrumental" of What God Wants with a great atmotspheric guitar solo. Musically is the closest Roger Waters ever came to sound like his old band in the 70s; that and the ballad of Bill Hubbard and perhaps It's A Miracle. There's also a little bit of Run Like Hell, or even maybe a sorta The Eye Of The Tiger riff thing in it :-;

Oh wait, it's not an instrumental at all, but I guess I remembered as that because it is one of the very few Waters pieces where the music seems to take more prominence than the lyrics. The lyrics are kinda stoopid BTW.

The lyrics are great, although too metaphorical even for Roger Waters. I can't help to notice that Part II has the best set of lyrics though, and it's just what one could expect from Roger.

As someone posted earlier, "Amused To Death" marked the time when Roger stopped experimenting with creating his own style of sound (as on "When The Wind Blows" and "Radio K.A.O.S.") and turned back to making Floyd-like music, and if he in turn kicked Dave out of the band back in 1984 I believe we would eventually still have "Amused To Death" of some sorts. In my opinion, Roger's (and, as a matter of fact, David's, too) best works are those which, intentionally or not, imitate Pink Floyd.

While i don't think they are a good set of lyrics i do think Roger does a very good delivery in the song that makes them seem a little better - on paper though i'd agree they are pretty dumb. Pretty much the same way i feel about Too Much Rope wherein again the power of the lyrics is enhanced greatly by the vocal performance. Also, on the album it is quite refreshing to hear a song that Roger actually sings without employing backing vocalists and stupid sound effects - i still think of ATD as an utter cringe to listen to in places due to the excessive over production

What God Wants Pt. 2

Do you believe in a better day
Do you have a faith in a golden way
If you do then we must come together this day
Come together as one united
Television audience
Brought together the sound of my voice
United united financially united socially
United spiritually and all possible ways
Through the power of money
And the power of your prayers...

What God wants God gets God help us all
God wants dollars
God wants cents
God wants pounds shillings and pence
God wants guilders
God wants kroner
God wants Swiss francs
God wants French francs
Oui il veut des francs francais
God wants escudos
God wants pesetas
Don't send lira
God don't want small potatoes
God wants small towns
God wants pain
God wants clean up rock campaigns
God wants widows
God wants solution
God wants TV
God wants contributions
What God wants God gets God help us all
God wants silver
God wants gold
God wants his secret
Never to be told
God wants gigolos
God wants giraffes
God wants politics
God wants a good laugh
What God wants God gets God help us all
God wants friendship
God wants fame
God wants credit
God wants blame
God wants poverty
God wants wealth
God wants insurance
God wants to cover himself
What God wants God gets God help us all

Thats what makes it so clever, plenty of non musos, miss it and miss the point of it, or the pointlessness of the lives we live!
Just listen to the harmonics in Jeffs Solo, just incredible.

Don't be afraid it's only business
The alien prophet sighed
The vulture and the magpie, took the cash box from its hook
The monkey in the corner, wrote the figures in his book
Crazed the checkout lady's fingers flash across the till
And the captain posts the menu for the day
And in banks across the world Christians Moslems Hindus Jews
And people of every race creed colour tint or hue
Get down on their knees and pray
The raccoon and the groundhog neatly, make up bags of change
But the monkey in the corner
Well he's slowly drifting out of range

Christ it's freezing inside the veteran cries
The hyenas break cover and stream through the meadow
And the fog rolls in
To his bottle of gin
So he picks up a stone, looks like a bone
And the bullets fly
And the rivers run dry
And the fat girls sigh
And the network anchor persons lie
And the soldier's alone
In the video zone
But the monkey's not watching
He's slipped out to the kitchen
To pile the dishes
And answer the phone

Just to clarify this Nick, are you saying that at the festival in Seville, Spain he reportedly introduced this as Monkey Television?
