Italian artist suing Roger Waters over album artwork

Post by danielcaux »

It seems like another exciting chapter in the Pink Floyd story is being written right now! Apparently an italian artist is suing Roger Waters over claims of plagiarizing his style for the artwork of this new album. And as a result the court is stopping the sales of ITTLWRW in Italy until it resolves the case.

Interesting! I certainly see the similarities, the concept behind both pieces of art is the same: that of cancelling words with a black marker in a document. But it's such a basic concept and common practice, that it's really difficult to tell if it's a case of plagiarism or just of two artist using the same idea for their respective works independently. What do you think?

I was also thinking, had Magritte lived to see it, would he have sued Storm Thorgerson over the art of Wish You Here for copying his style? It's kinda the same case here (if indeed it was the case of one artist copying other's style).

To coin an appropriate phrase "you've gotta be crazy". I cannot believe that Roger Waters, or whoever designed the cover was influenced by the Italian or the style of the artwork was an attempt to plagiarise ... to me the cover was just based on the style and presentation of the many CIA or NSA documents we now see in redacted form -

For info, there is a more than a hint of a CIA document on pages 2 and 3 in the CD booklet.

PS, regarding the Storm video ... I've not seen that before, thanks for posting

Roger loves the controversy. Like the Beatles-slaughtering-babies record cover, he'll apply by hand a new image.

How about a negative of what is already there?

I liked the Braille idea. Whatever happened to that ??????

"Storm had already been pushed out a little bit by [The Wall]. Roger was very displeased with him - these are very old stories and I can't claim to remember every detail but I think it culminated in Hipgnosis putting Animals into a book of album covers and saying it was theirs and didn't put in that it was from an idea by Roger. Roger's keen quest for credit on everything at the time made him rather upset."

Roger probably gave Emilio an autographed copy of Momentary Lapse of Reason.
