I've never heard one by the Floyd. I would certainly enjoy that.

I believe Barrett played it in the 1970s, with 'Stars'. No recording has surfaced, though.Mr Kite wrote:I've never heard one by the Floyd. I would certainly enjoy that.

It would be interesting to see Gilmour play it. I recall reading that Gilmour is the only one, other than Barrett, knowing how to make the scratchy sound. (Or has this secret been discovered by others?)

Thanks Wolfpack. I do recall hearing that they played that. I think a recording does exist from that gig. Perhaps one day...
I have heard some covers that I enjoyed. You may (or may not) like them yourself.
A 12 string Rickenbacker version:

The drummer gets all up in this one - a cross between Micky Dolenz and Keith Moon by way of excess amyl- if you can picture that:

We played this great song many times with my old band...

Lucifer Sam almost sounds like a Mod anthem in those clips! Pretty cool.

I was wondering, how was a regular setlist for the Floyd in 66 and 67? Astronomy Domine, IO and what else? Roger always said that they didn't like playing the pop hits, so what did they play instead?

It was definitely played live by the band. There's this comment by triffiks "Ps saw Syd perfom it live in Worthing in the year ^%^$^%*&& (Cant remember late 60s) LOL"

Re: Is there a recording of Lucifer Sam live?
I think the Games For May setlist was atypical, as they were deliberately trying to link several songs together for a theatrical experience, with transitional sound effects and other performance art touches ... sort of a precursor to The Man and the Journey and therefor utlimately their 1970s conceptual suites
normally at that point they played in clubs and I believe did a more freeform set
there was a 1966 setlist written down on a scrap of paper which has been reproduced in several books:
14 Oct 1966, All Saints Church Hall, London, England
1. Pink Theme
2. Let's Roll Another One
3. Gimme A Break
4. Piggy Back
5. Stoned Alone
6. I Can Tell
7. The Gnome
8. Interstellar Overdrive
9. Lucy Leave
10. Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk
11. Flapdoodle Dealing
12. Snowing
13. Matilda Mother
14. Pow R. Toc H.
15. Astronomy Domine
theres also two audience recordings from late 1966 so we know not only what they played, but what some of those weird titles sound like:
13 Sep 1967, Star Club, Copenhagen.
1. Stoned Alone
2. Arnold Layne
3. One In A Million
4. Matilda Mother
5. Scream Thy Last Scream
6. Astronomy Domine
13 Nov 1967, Oude-Ahoy Hallen, Rotterdam
1. Reaction In G
2. Pow R Toc H
3. An Old Woman With A Casket
4. Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
5. Interstellar Overdrive
(Im just copying & pasting these bits from quick Google queries so there may be errors)
Reaction In G and Stoned Alone are the same song, as I recall
and Old Woman With a Casket is of course Scream Thy Last Scream
it seems their setlists were a lot more variable with Syd than they would be once Roger became the new boss

I think in the transition period, just before they lost Syd, they occasionally filled whole sets with IO so that Syd didn't have to sing. It's what my Nice CD sleeve says anyway.
