STLS & Vegetable Man mixes

Post by flippikat »

I was just thinking.. if EMI ever get around to releasing these songs, how do you think they should be mixed, more like the 1974 or 1987 mixes?

The 1974 mixes that are circulating are more conservative to my ears - the chipmunk voice in STLS is lower in the mix, for a start - but the sheer assault of the 1987 mixes is quite an experience - especially all those messy vocal tracks in Vegetable Man!

Funnily enough, until I heard both sets recently, I'd only heard the 1974 Vegetable Man (without the out of synch vocal tracks mixed low) and the 1987 STLS (With the chipmunk loud in the mix).

Or maybe they should release "clean" versions of the songs, with just a lead vocal and no extra vocal overdubs?

They did it with 'Strawberry Fields Forever take 1' on the Beatles Anthology - the backing vocals in one verse were left out, and now collectors have a bootleg version with harmonies and an official version without them.

Clean it up nice so everything sits nicely and can be heard, especially in 5.1! Imagine that!

I've heard that there are mono mixes around that are claimed to be 1967 or 1968 mixes, but could well just be fold-together versions of the 1974 & 87 mixes..

To my ears, everything other mix I've heard sounds like the 1974 mixes (more focus on the instruments, less cluttering from vocal overdubs) or the 1987 mixes (flooded with vocal overdubs, and rather headache inducing)

Don't forget the various BBC versions.

There's the cassette tape copy off an 1980's broadcast that's fake stereo, which was then folded down to mono and appears on nearly every bootleg, and sounds horrible.

Then there's the fold down of the above in mono, which as I said, is the horrible sounding one.

Then recently there's the easy on the ear's clean off air version which sounds great, I uploaded it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LjNKUD94L8

Sounds great. Best copy I've heard. Do you also have the other songs of this session? On which roio can these copies be found?
