It's a bit sloppy. Pink Floyd didn't start in the late 60's and he was only 'living off royalties' from Echoes for about 2 yrs if that because it'd have taken a year for them to come through.

Not heard the story of Syd meeting Roger in Harrods before.

Was The Wall 'directly based on him'? I thought it was more about Roger and the spitting incident with some things taken from Syd not to mention Rick's supposedly being the inspiration for Nobody home.

Parts of The Wall the film were based on him yes. The scene where Geldof has the cig in his hand, Waters said this was all based on Syd. The spitting incident is what inspired the "wall" concept of the album, ie building a wall.
The story of Syd in Harrods is in lots of different books on Syd and the Floyd and Waters mentioned it in various interviews.
It says they were the spirit of the late 60s London scene, it doesn't say they started then.
You get the general idea of the royalties I am sure, he was living off them for most part and in the end it was the royalties of Echoes especially as it was such a big seller. Most areas of research show this.
The article is more a celebration of his music, and putting the mythical stuff to one side. That was the general point of the article really.
