Sex abuse scandal at my school.

Post by rememberaday »

I have refrained from talking about problems in general because I don't really like talking about negative stuff on the internet, much less on a music forum until they are absolutely necessary.

I study at Jakarta International School (JIS), which is in general a fantastic (world-class infact) school that provides extremely good education through quality teaching and resources. Some info about the school here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_In ... nal_School
https://www.jisedu.or.id/

Sadly in April, a 6 year old boy was allegedly molested by 5 cleaners of ISS, an outsourced company that JIS used (JIS has since terminated its contract with ISS). Apparently he was molested upto 23 times in school toilets, during school hours, between February and March. The victim, the son of an Indonesian woman and a Dutch man, identified 5 cleaners as the men who had raped him. In some cases, the abuse was witnessed by the victim's friend.

About a month later, two other "victims" have come forward (the friend of the 1st victim being one of them) and claimed that they were raped at the school. Ever since the mother of the first victim publicly announced and blamed the school - which is a valid claim to an extent - for the abuse, investagation has been heavily skewed and corrupt. At first most of the school community synpathised with the victim, but recently the mothers and the Indonesian police have looked to use this incident to severely target my school (my school is an international American school, and there is considerable anti-foreigner sentiment in many parts of Indonesia). They have often varied their allegations.

It comes to this now: the mothers claim that the teachers of the school itself raped (and apparently video-recorded) the children. Two teachers, a Canadian and and Indonesian, none of them actually teaching the victims, have been unfairly imprisoned. This is a nightmare for them - to be unfairly accused of child sexual abuse can destroy a person's reputation. The 1st mother has also launched a lawsuit of 125 US$ against the school (another sign that the case is more about money and local politics rather than the actual tragedy), and if it succeeds, if might unfortunately signal bankruptcy for JIS.

I can vouch for my school and the two teachers - JIS is a school that respects integrity, resilience and compassion and does not deserve the criticism and downright hatred it is copping at this stage. So far, our school has not buckled under pressure and been dealing with this tragedy in a strong manner. However, we, and especially the two detained teachers, would like a little support. If any of you could spread the word - ask in this thread or PM me for details- and get more word out about this injustice, that'd be an incredible favour. I haven't revealed a lot about this case, and I didn't know how to put this in words or where to tell others, so I posted it here because NPF has been a valuable place of support in past times for me. Thanks in advance.

A few links to guide people (please note the bias against the school in the Indonesian newspapers):
