Maybe it's an age thing, but I really don't get the reasoning behind using acronyms for Floyd album names. In my day we used to call Piper at the gates of dawn "Piper" and not PATGOD.
So those in the know......why?
What is it with acronyms?

Re: What is it with acronyms?
I know. Because it's quicker to type TPATGOD than 'The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' and DSOTM than 'Dark Side Of The Moon'. It has nothing to do with everyday speech, but it's immeasurably more convenient in internet communication.

Thanks
More of a case of lazy fingers, it must be hard for people new to Floyd to comprehend all these acronyms

I'd rather say people new to the forum, but yes. It took me a while to get into it (I used to write the whole names too when I first started posting here), and I wasn't new to Floyd. Now it all comes naturally. 'The Endless River' came out a month ago and it's already known as TER here.

Maybe a generational thing and a sign of Forums changing?
That's your position on this subject now fixed. I don't mind and enjoy working them out!

Re: What is it with acronyms?
I think it's something to do with the fact that if you call PATGOD "Piper," then someone is going to be killing themselves looking for a Pink Floyd album simply named "Piper."
PATGOD lets them know that there are more words in the title than merely "Piper."
Although it doesn't let them know that there's a "The" at the beginning. *shrug*

Hmmm no, not really. Maybe when you were young and didn't have access to the internet... But sites like this didnt exist then so..mosespa wrote:I think it's something to do with the fact that if you call PATGOD "Piper," then someone is going to be killing themselves looking for a Pink Floyd album simply named "Piper."
These are the acronyms we use for the albums, although some albums don't have an acronym because they don't actually need it. Or maybe because it would sound too stupid:
PATGOD
ASOS
More
Ummagumma???? U?? UG????
AHM
Meddle
OBC
DSOTM
WYWH
Animals
The Wall ...as far as I know no one calls it TW, right??
TFC
AMLOR
TDB
There are also acronyms for some of the songs. Out of the top of my head the most used would be:
IO
STCFTHOTS (which is a pain to write actually)
ASOS
CWTAE
Several Species (yeah, because it's faster that way and nobody really wants to remember the first letter of each word of the title of that song!!)
FOS
APB
OOTD
TGGITS
ACYL
SOYCD
WTTM
WYWH
POTW
ABITW
...and I'm going to stop there.

There isn't a forehead slap gif on this forum so please accept this one not in relation to the topic, but more to demonstrate me going "AAAAAAAAHHHHHhhhhhh!!!" and feeling idiotic for not guessing these.twcc wrote:^^^

Really Pink Floyd song acronyms should have been the questions on Mastermind!

Re: What is it with acronyms?
I still can't get my poor old brain to wrap itself around these acronyms. I work in software, and I'm faced with technical acronyms all day long and don't have a problem with these. Yet when faced with album names or song titles, I just see random letters

Are you one of the type that gets Halloween confused with Christmas ? - it's an easy mistake as Oct 31 = Dec 25
