I like HammerHead Rhythm Station. It is freeware, it uses samples, it is incredibly easy to use, you can change the settings in real time (like a Roland drum machine) and you can screw up the sounds if you like. You can also render to WAV in real time if you want. It's pretty groovy all round. If you're extra snobby about rigid drum patterns I recommend you buy a cymbal and a triangle and hit them yourself on a separate track. That way you get a tight groove with a human feel. Works for me.
