it says in the november issue of mojo magazine in the piece about syds house being up for sale that in recent years he had "several fingers amputated" after complications arose from his diabetes
does anyone know if this is true??
i hadn't heard it before

It's very possible he lost a few fingertips to an infection (possibly using bad testing methods?). I can't see that many fingertips in that image (although they could just be hidden by a black strap or his curled hands), and without fingertips you can do just about anything you could with them with minimal difficulty adapting. You could type, paint, hold things, even play a guitar (although that would hurt if you held down strings if your aputated fingerstub is still sore, or if there was a phantom-limb issue; nothing that'd last more than a month or two).
