Jigolo Aunt - great organs!!

Post by Keith Jordan »

I am just listening to Jigolo Aunt by Syd Barrett and am thinking the organ playing is just the greatest ever on any Syd Barrett or Pink Floyd song!!!!

Who is in agreement? Who will disagree? Who will offer better organ sounds? :o :D

Yes! I love it. A very cool arrangement. It's either a Hammond B3 or M100 with the second harmonic percussion turned on and then played through a Leslie speaker.

I really love that Gigolo Aunt as well--3/5 of the five-man Floyd (same percentage as the most recent albums).

The 1967 backing track "In the Beechwoods" has phenomenal organ-work. Also, from the Star Club in Copenhagen the same year, "Matilda Mother" features an extended jam with great interactions between Rick and Syd.

...and one might explore indefinitely Rick's playing on live versions of "A Saucerful of Secrets" (all sections).

Syd really seemed more together and sane than he did on Madcap Laughs, having a more enjoyable time playing word games and appearing live (albiet on the radio). Had he felt like it, he could've probably continued with a career a bit longer (with help, of course); he wasn't being forced to work like he was for TML.

Yeah, it is a great song and the organ is very cool! I think Barrett is a better album than The Madcap Laughs overall, because Syd really does seem more together on it, plus most of the tracks are played with other musicians which really adds to it, although that's not to say that I dislike his solo stuff with no other musicians, because that it great too.

Gotta give it a listen... but it's GOTTA be better than most of PF keys so that I like it :)

Top two organ tracks in my book are "Celestial Voices" (the Ummagumma version), and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". Both of those songs define organ-based rock for me.

Yeah! A lot of people like to rip In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida a new asshole but the organ playing on that is very good!

Anybody have any ideas of what Syd was trying to get across in the lyrics of Gigolo Aunt? :smt017

He means that his auntie was a gigolo. There is no wonder he went insane.

Good try, but I think Syd is describing a woman he encountered, most likely a girlfriend or groupie that he found alluring, yet difficult to understand or maintain a relationship with. Just MHO.

Grooving around in a trench coat
with the satin entrail
Seems to be all around in tin and lead pail, we pale
Jiving on down to the beach
to see the blue and the gray
seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!

Will you please keep on the track
'cause I almost want you back
'cause I know what you are
you are a gigolo aunt, you're a gigolo aunt!
Yes I know what you are
you are a gigolo aunt, you're a gigolo aunt!

Heading down with the light, the dust in your way
she was angrier than, than her watershell male
life to this love to me - heading me down to me
thunderbird shale
seems to be all and it's rosy - it's a beautiful day!
will you please keep on the track
'cause I almost want you back
'cause I know what you are
you are a gigolo aunt
