Live with(out) guest artists?

Post by Sunduc »

I notice that three of my most beloved PF pieces feature guest artists:
* The sax on Wish You Were Here
* Clare Torry on Great Gig in the Sky
* The choir on Atom Heart Mother

(and OK, 4: mademoiselle nobs)

While I enjoy concert versions of most of PFs stuff -- as much as or at times more than the studio versions, I find that my enjoyment of the concerts versions of these I have heard so far is way below my enjoyment of the studio versions; Moog (orwhatever it is) is not a good substitute for sax, The Great Gig just should not be instrumental, and the Atom Heart Mother suite just isn't without the choir. I used to think the Suite was a waste of 1 side of an LP, but suddenly one day something just clicked, and now I place that strange choir among the absolute Floyd gems. What are your opinions on this difference?

i actually think the AHM version played by the 4 Floyds only is better than with choir. Or maybe its just because i like it when the live version sounds differnet to the album version.

Among at least dozen songs that feature sax, your favourite is the one that doesn't?

WYWH the album, not the song. Sorry if I wasn't explicit. Song: Shine On ...

Apart from "Great Gig", I would prefer all their live stuff to have been just the four Floyds with no others.

One thing I really enjoy about live music is the challenge of a band having to adapt their material without studio trickery, overdubs, or guest session players.

To my ears, the early pre-studio "Dark Side" gigs they did in 1972 sound more exciting and vital than tours they did after the album came out when they had a sax players and backing singers in tow.

The flip side is a song like Echoes that they played for years with just the four of them and had to simplify dramatically from the recorded version.

Last year David had an exceptional guitarist in Phil Manzanera playing the layered parts with him on Echoes. The live Echoes from that tour are spell binding.

I have seen many Floyd concert

Animals '77 in NYC had no guest musicians.

The Wall, on Long Island, NY had no guest musicians, but had 4 male vocalists doing some background singing.

The next 2 concerts, Thunder and PULSE had many guest musicians and vocalists.

These two musicians were NOT on the stage for the Animals"77 concert on 07/04/77 at Madison Square Garden in NYC. I would love to see, and buy, a video or DVD of that concert. Hopefully, some day it will be released.
