Getting in an argument with some friends recently about who's better, pink floyd or queen. here's some highlights.

"Pink floyd, pah, it's not like anyone from pink floyd has has a solo career."

"i heard a pink floyd song called Walls and it was ****ing ****, Floyd can't sing"

"Pink floyd did trance music"

The conlusion

"My dad listens to Pink Floyd so that makes them crap, you're in to old git music"

Me: But you see, pink floyd did this strange thing where their music was aimed at people their own age when they did it, effectively people could get older with them"

"Yeah big deal, old people buy their recored now adays"

Me: So new bands are the best bands?

"Erm, queen came out after pink floyd so that makes them more modern"

Me: but they stopped after them, unless you count last years jubilee gig

"Ok, you win."

Crazy eh?

I agree that most people do not understand the nuances of any one band but one of the worst ones is "I really like that Jethro Tull guy" Are these people into regressive agriculture or something?

Admittingly this is the hight of snobbery looking down upon people for not having a great knowlege of bands.

You're right, David.

I've met a lot of people who think ABITW Part II is "We Don't Need No Education" or simply "Another Brick In The Wall." There's no need to look down upon them, though. Nobody can know a lot about every band, especially bands they do not listen to on a consistent basis.

I certainly do not appreciate it when someone snarls at me for not knowing EVERYTHING about their favorite band, or for not liking the music they listen to.

HOWEVER, you better know a lot about Pink Floyd if you're going to make certain claims around me

I have met maybe one person, that was a girl, who knew band called Pink Floyd (Oh! That's that weird acid-music...)... well maybe it's because I live in Northern Finland.

My cousin can't say "Pink Floyd", he says "Pink Fluid"

Yeah, I knew someone who said 'I hate pink floyd. the only song of theirs' I like is "the wall"'. Even though I knew he meant another brick in the wall pt2 I corrected him. He thanked me and was clearly impressed with my knowledge of Pink Floyd. I felt very proud.
