Nick Mason as Sole Promoter of Why Pink Floyd... WHY??

Post by Keith Jordan »

It seems that only Nick Mason has been bothering so far to promote the new Why Pink Floyd release schedule with his interviews in Billboard and Rolling Stone and short YouTube clips. Perhaps when the publicity maching is "firing on all cylinders" the other guys will start saying something about it. Or perhaps this is all EMI's doing and Nick has been bought off as the face of the project in exchange for a new car?

Stranger things have happened!

Ooh I detect a conspiracy theory! I wonder will Roger do any promotion of this?

Well Nick is the "Mr Nice" of Pink Floyd, so I'm happy they've picked him to do all the interviews.
As far back as 1994 (or was it 95?) he said on that BBC documentary that "Umma Gumma was a failed experiment, albeit an interesting one."
I can't see Dave or Roger being that kind to it after all this time!

Nick is also the only member of the band to be on every album and (according to Inside Out, I think,) was also the official archivist of the band.

Makes sense to me that he'd be the guy doing the heaviest promotion. Waters is doing The Wall, Gilmour doesn't seem terribly interested in doing things as Pink Floyd anymore and so long as both Barret and Wright continue to insist upon being dead, they're not going to be saying much of anything at all. *shrug*

Perhaps it is Nick who pushed for the project to happen then?

Personally, I think Nick should let me raid his archive and get loads of it up on NPF. I must send him a message about that one day. 8)

Have David or Roger even mentioned the project since its announcement?

Possibly Nick was the primary force...but I think it just as likely that someone (or a group of someones) at the label had noticed that these boxed sets for individual albums seem to be kind of catching on and thought that Pink Floyd were just the band for such a treatment.

I've not heard anything from Gilmour or Waters about it all.

It seems like Gilmour would have had a vote on it, at least.

Gilmour probably want to avoid having to answer the same old questions about reunion of Pink Floyd in interviews about.

So, let Nick do the job.

Perhaps. Nick also comes across as someone who doesn't mind doing these interviews. It's probably not true of course but he does seem to be more personable than David.

I suspect he has more interest in "monitizing" the catalogue than the others...um, I mean to say he has more interest in the archive than the others...actually, I think both in a good way.

For years he stood like Switzerland, not having a significant creative part but caring mostly about he band and unity of it.
Others are were more of an egotrippers. Still are.

He is the greatest Floyd fan out of them all. Thats why.

I wonder how long he has had an idea of bringing this material out ? When I was at his book signing I asked some fairly vague question about the chances of archive stuff coming out and he was non-committal in his answer. Not that I'm suggesting I gave him the idea btw :D

Some thoughts on the subject in no particular order:

1. Maybe David and Roger consider themselves to be "too cool" to promote a collection of remastered discs from their back catalog.
2. Maybe they were more inclined to promote Echoes because they all had a hand in selecting the tracks.
3. Something to do with Rick's death? Sadness?
4. Nick is the "historian" and this is, in essence, a presentable history of the Floyd.
5. Nick is in need of the money, since he is worth a whopping 50 mil pounds less than the others (Sorry, I am an American. I can't do the L thingy in front of the number).
6. Nick is indeed the more cordial of the group as far as the press goes, although I am sure he wished he would have thought of the dog turd in the box trick.
7. Nick's jowls resemble those of a bulldog the older he gets (Sorry again, I know this has nothing to do with the topic but I felt compelled to say it. Call it Truthful Tourette's).

Perhaps because Roger's busy touring The Wall and David knew Charlie's trial would be happening around now.
