I'm pleased for Bob ... but, since hearing this earlier today, I'm still a little uneasy as most of the "literature" really only works when the words are accompanied by the music. That said, I have read the words of Forever Young at a memorial service, they worked, but I think that may be an exception.

Can anyone really argue with this?
I think the general consensus within the music industry would agree Dylan's work and lyrics are exceptionally brilliant whether you like him or loathe him. (How can anyone seriously loathe him?)

His last tour in the UK was an interesting one. This figure bopping around on stage in the shadow of these rather large living room lights. Forever living up to his own image that many see him for.

You may be overthinking it. Bob's lyrics stand as poetry...period. But then that's my opinion.

Too true. The lyrics do indeed stand as poetry; the Nobel Prize was, of course, for literature not poetry.

Don't see any difference.

Literature -

... written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit.

Poetry -

... work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm.

I suppose someone could technically wiggle some Bob Dylan lyrics into this definition if they really wanted to.

He's supposed to be coming to Paducah on the 30th.

I don't plan on attending, as the time I would have wanted to have seen him is long since passed.

But, this just makes me wonder if this won't be the reason he cancels.

Makes no difference to me. That's the beauty of words.

Edited afterthought....Since it was not me who awarded the Nobel prize perhaps this clarification of literature and poetry should be brought up before the committee who did. As for me...again...makes no difference. Guess it didn't to them either. :::shrug::: (Stole that last bit from Mosespa...wink wink.)

Dylan has an extraordinary body of work behind him. I'm not sure what he will think of this, I haven't seen him quoted. But for me this is a great moment in time. The 'Establishment' have recognized one of the great artists of the 20th Century, who just happens to be aligned to Rock, for want of a better word. His words will be quoted long beyond our lives.

Have seen him twice in past years...like you...not when I would really have preferred but the shows I did see were good, especially the second one. First was rather old-timey, the second rather strident and rock-ish. Poor lads voice is shot these days though. Worse than Keith Richards. :::shrug::: (okay that's twice I stole that....sorry man, won't happen again.) [-X Bad Vlad.

The Nobel Committee says he's completely ignoring their calls and e-mails. Maybe he's not too happy about it after all?
