This is just my personal taste, but I didn't like the album when it first came out, and sadly, I still don't. To me, it sounds like (typically) overproduced, bland 80's pop music with too many warm synth pads. For 80's Peter Gabriel I would pick Peter Gabriel 3 aka 'Melt'. I find it a far more creative, challenging and interesting album that doesn't have the edges all polished off like 'So' does.

What, for you, makes 'So' one of the best albums ever?

I just like the songs, all of them
Especially: in your eyes, red rain, mercy street, this js the picture, don't give up, we do what were told
The quality is just great. From his follow up album i only like steam/love to be loved. Just two songs, lol.

My other fave albums from the 80s are
Avalon (roxy music)
Graceland (paul simon)
Dream of the blue turtles (sting)
The colour of spring (talk talk)
Boys and Girls (bryan ferry)
Radio kaos (rw)
A momentary lapse (pf)

For me its his most rounded and accessible album. It benefited from the increase in video shows and video EP's around 1986 with the video for "Sledgehammer" which was a catchy song and a good video. Other highlights include Big love. Of the 8 tracks on the original album 5 were released as singles.

That. The overall song quality on 'So' is pretty even, unlike most of his older albums which include 2-3 really great songs and the rest ranging between mediocre and BS. I liked both 'Us' and 'Up' better though, 'Up' probably being my favourite album of his despite being least accessible of them all.

From us I only like LtbL and steam. From up only more than this.
So what I do is add those three songs to SO and then I have an amazing album. Those three accessible commercial songs really fit!

Funny, while I always crank the volume up when I hear those songs you mention on the radio (if ever), those are probably my least favourite songs from 'Us' and 'Up', respectively. On the other hand I find 'Come Talk To Me' and 'Sky Blue' simply amazing. To each his own, I guess. :)

You are right it is Big Time but on the original release there are 8 songs - 'This Is the Picture (Excellent Birds)' was not on the original vinyl release

Not one I listen to now but I liked it at the time.

Red Rain is still a fantastically produced song, the best from that album.

Much prefer his experimental stuff.

I think it's a good album, but I don't think it's PG's best. I prefer Up. Though, it's a tricky thing as The Barry Williams Show is in my opinion not quite up to standard, but there are so many excellent songs on the album. So is more consistent, and certainly stands up now days, but I just prefer Up. I wish PG would release another album.
