Not being pedantic, it was $3.975Mill!!
Incredible, and for charity. $21.5Mill in total.

A truly huge and remarkable charitable donation; well done DG.

You are quite correct.

The man who purchased it could have doubled or even trebled his bid and not even see his bank account move!
I guess it was always going to be that way.

Even the low-ball estimates went for 10's of thousands more. Glad I didn't try. Good for his charity, though.

Good the money went to charity, too bad not in public museums and in private collections:

It's Davey Gilmour night on the Sky Arts Channel Friday the 28th.
At 7.30pm it's a special half hour show about the auction. Followed by a showing of Gdansk, then DSOTM Classic Albums again before another running of Delicate Sound of Thunder.

DAVID GILMOUR'S GUITARS by Jimi Dean Barrett

One million
One million thousand
One million thousand hundred

"Such an iconic guitar
Expected to reach a high price"
One million thousand hundred hundred
To voice over

"No, I'm not bidding anything!"
One million thousand hundred hundred thousand
"This impossible! My voice-over recorded
Five days after live!"

One million thousand hundred hundred thousand hundred
"Help! I can't get out the studio!"

One million thousand hundred hundred thousand hundred thousand
"Such pressure on neck and body for twisting
Scan emergency exit direction in showroom"

One million thousand hundred hundred thousand hundred thousand hundred
"But I still feel the seat feet studio reach
And there in time my last five years were lies!
I remember a family... Where could I have money?!!"

One million thousand hundred hundred thousand hundred thousand hundred hundred
"The door locked but hear smashed debt collectors!
Actually smashed and somehow access to firearms!"

One million thousand hundred hundred thousand hundred thousand hundred hundred thousand
Sold to man right there disheveled and muttering something
About being hired to be voice-over
Only to wind up six string ruined
In audience where David Gilmour's guitars
Auctioned off
It's not important nobody saw him appear
It's still vital he doesn't get household broadcast access
And that was it!
Sold instruments!
All for great cause no more questions
Nothing is Hitler when remembering buildings
Take more legal precedent than humans
And none of this in the programme?Oh hang on, here's the narrator

"Ruined!
Please associate crying
Full on hysteria I am
Destroyed and ruined
All is lost for me
Broken chain of hanging sword
I don't even play six string
And prefer Soft Machine to Pink Floyd!".

I'll be curious to see if Their Mortal Remains goes anywhere after Madrid. Is there a stipulation built in that the new owners have to let the guitars be displayed in future venues? Does it make things trickier now that there are enormous financial values now placed on these items?

^^^
I am also curious. I purchased the catalogue and did not see any stipulation or request to make the items available for a future exhibition.

Interesting. Time will tell what happens I suppose.

It would be a real pity if the exhibition ends prematurely or continues on its 5 year run without Gilmour's guitars. It's unlikely that most of these guitars will ever be seen or played in public again so this has turned into a "Last chance to see".

Gilmour didn't sound fussed in the slightest where they all ended up. In fact he was his usual nonchalant self when asked if he was bothered what happened to them.
I guess he wouldn't have got rid of them if he was.

Some people just aren't sentimental and he comes across as one of those. I also suspect that he has retired and that we'll only see him popping up as someone's guest guitarist from time to time. Maybe it's harder to care about your guitars when you own so many of them? And he probably rarely played any of them, apart from when he'd take some of them on tour. We're looking at this as fans. He probably sees them things that were taking up too much room in his house.

More to do with where he is in life if you ask me. As you get older, you constantly re-evaluate your life. I suspect this is why Gilmour did what he did to a degree.
I was nevertheless surprised he sold his D35 and the black guitar.

I know it's been a year now, but I think it's very interesting which guitars he kept…

The famous “Workmate” Esquire/Tele
The sunburst Tele from the ’74-’77 tours
The white Custom Shop Tele
The sunburst Strat that has the Black Strat’s original maple neck
The Gretsch DuoJet
The 24-fret Bill Lewis guitar
The P-bass with the Gibson ‘mudbucker’ pickup
The red Jedsen lap steel
The Gibson lap steel
The Fender lap steel
The Fender pedal steel
The Weissenborn…

I did see the ones that were auctioned off when they were on display in New York, and I'm very glad I did. But like he said, they're just tools of the trade; the red Strat was made in Japan in the '80s, and he owns the best replica of the black Strat that Fender was able to produce. Of the ones he sold, the one I thought was really interesting was the '66 Strat, originally white but later stripped; purchased before the black Strat, and seen in footage with the plastic pickup covers removed - his first guitar mod (it doesn't do anything on a Strat, but removing the metal pickup covers on a Tele, like he did on his sunburst, does affect the tone).
