Gilmour once invited John Lydon to perform with Pink Floyd

Post by space triangle »

The punk-rock patriarch came close to accepting an invitation to perform live with Pink Floyd

'"John Lydon(Johnny Rotten) - I've met David Gilmour a few times and I just think he's an all right bloke. When the surviving members of Pink Floyd came to Los Angeles they asked me would I come on and do a bit of it with them". "The idea thrilled me no end," he said. "I came so close to doing it ... but ultimately it felt like I was trying to set myself up as some kind of pretentious person. I'm wary of the jam-session end of things.
The punk-rock patriarch seemed torn. "I just don't want to do it," he said. "But I wanted to do it. But just not when 20,000 people were there. I'd have gone to a studio and played around with it there. But not for the bigger picture. Privately, I'd love to go into the studio and do something with the album with them."

It's difficult to imagine Johnny Rotten and Pink Floyd plying togeter. 8)

To me, Waters's vocals of 'Run Like Hell' sounds very much like Johnny Rotten/Lydon at that time (1978/1979) .
Also his ranting in 'Waiting for the Worms', about the "dead wood".
And the compelete multi-part demo for 'Is There Anybody Out There', Waters wailing on the background.

I imagine 'The Wall' (or at least those tracks) as Pink Floyd's answer to the punk movement, by refering to The Sex Pistols.

Which is great, because he either thinks Roger is still in the band - which I'm sure would upset Roger to no end - or he doesn't care enough to make the distinction.

Isn't it ironic that in 1977 when punks were laughing at Pink Floyd, Pink Floyd were gobbing at their fans and releasing albums protesting the inhumanity of society.
