Both Final Cut and Gilmour era songs in your top 20?

Post by Annoying Twit »

Just curious about this after reading a thread on another forum.

Who would include songs from both The Final Cut and Gilmour era songs in their top 20 PF songs?

I would (and did), and I noticed that quite a few people did.

Of the people here, who would include songs both from The Final Cut and (TDB, AMLoR, and TER) in their top 20 PF songs?

Here is my top 20 Pink Floyd songs:

1. Time
2. Echoes
3. Comfortably Numb
4. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts I - V)
5. Pigs (Three Different Ones)
6. The Great Gig In The Sky
7. Hey You
8. Us And Them
9. Dogs
10. Welcome To The Machine
11. Nobody Home
12. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts VI - IX)
13. Brain Damage/Eclipse
14. Wot's... Uh The Deal
15. Wish You Were Here
16. Breathe
17. Another Brick in the Wall (Part 1)
18. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun
19. Run Like Hell
20. Sheep

So, no place for the Final Cut and Gilmour era songs for me. And, no place on the list for Syd Barrett songs too. But, I must say it's plenty of a good and ok songs which remained outside my Top 20 ilst.

Ok, so can't include solo material but just those three albums. Here's twenty and if your favourite doesn't appear in this list, I apologise!
EDIT: I appear to have made a sort of best of as opposed to top 20

Marooned
Your Possible Pasts
One Slip
Sum/Skins
The Hero's Return
On The Turning Away
A Great Day For Freedom
It's What We Do
The Fletcher Memorial Home
Sorrow
Wearing The Inside Out
Autumn '68
Signs of Life
Paranoid Eyes
Lost For Words
The Lost Art Of Conversation
Not Now John
Learning To Fly
High Hopes
Two Suns In The Sunset

Interesting. You've left out my two favorite songs from tfc: The title track and Gunner's Dream.

Easy for me, as The Final Cut is one of my favourite Pink Floyd albums.

Can't honestly think of rating an entire 20 songs in order, as they fluctuate quite a lot. But can definitely say The Final Cut, The Gunners Dream and Two Suns in the Sunset would be in there for sure!

Which Gilmour era songs would you put in the top 20?

Oooh, forgot about that bit of the question!

But as I said I really struggle to place Pink Floyd songs into a definable Top 20. Usually I just select my three favourites from each album, so using that practice:

A Momentary Lapse of Reason:
  • Yet Another Movie
  • One Slip
  • Learning to Fly
The Division Bell:
  • Coming Back to Life
  • Wearing The Inside Out
  • Lost For Words
The Endless River:
  • Anisina
  • Surfacing
  • Louder Than Words

I respect everyone’s opinion. But, Pink Floyd has done 167 official songs during band's career. And, Pink Floyd was at his best when all four members of the band contributed to the creation of the songs. Therefore (and realistically speaking) there is no chance any of the songs in which all of bands members don't participate could be on the Top 20 list. 'High Hopes', 'The Final Cut' and 'The Gunners Dream' these songs might perhaps approach a possible 'Top 50 Pink Floyd songs' list.

Respectfully I'd have to disagree with you, especially when two of the albums we're discussing were officially UK Number 1s.

Yes, these albums might not tickle your fancy, but they must've impressed some folk otherwise they would've flopped straight away. The Final Cut has some of the best lyrical content I think, but admittedly Roger's delivery is definitely not everyone's cup of tea. A Momentary Lapse of Reason was an odd recording period for Floyd, so again those songs can understandably be viewed with disdain by some.

But The Division Bell is a gorgeous sounding album. And I'm predominantly a fan of the Waters-led era. I can understand the previous two albums not meeting everyone's "standard" of mid-70s Floyd content, but TDB is exquisite.

The Endless River also sounds wonderful, and as a large sound file it flows brilliantly to me. But therefore plucking one or two songs out of that flow can be tough (apart from maybe Louder Than Words).

Argh! If I only made one more cycle instead of keeping to twenty! Another thing is that's not so much a ranking. Two Suns In The Sunset would be far higher up the list. Just made it as a listening experience I'd like to have.

Well let´s try this...

Dogs
Time
Hey You
Shine on you crazy diamond VI-IX
On the turning away
The Gunners Dream
Is there anybody out there
Nobody Home
The Final Cut
Sorrow
Yet Another Movie
Sheep
Echoes
Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse (yeah I cheated here)
The Thin Ice
Mother
Welcome to the Machine
Pigs 3DO
One of these days
Atom Heart Mother

Dogs is the all time #1, the rest keeps changing depending on my mood. Wish you were here and Comfortably Numb might return into the top 20 some day, but currently they are totally overplayed. Sadly no top 20 material in Division Bell and Endless River, but some solo stuff from David Gilmours first album and Is this the life would easily sneak in there. Also notably absent is the Syd era, it´s just not for me I guess.
