Listen to Early Morning Henry featuring Pink Floyd

Post by Keith Jordan »

Pink Floyd collectors will be very excited to learn that a recording, thought lost forever, featuring Pink Floyd as a backing band, has been found.

Listen now... https://www.neptunepinkfloyd.co.uk/earl ... pink-floyd

Wonderful indeed! [-D-]

(and in the unforgettable words of CBS representative Stephen Ralbovsky to David Gilmour, after he listened to the new album demos in November 1986, the music "doesn't sound a fucking thing like Pink Floyd" :lol:)

It is remarkable that this one was recorded on the same day as "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun". Do we know more, why were they doing this as a backing band?

Sounds like Grantchester Meadows or Echoes in some ways. Not pink floyd though. Just backing.

The times, dates and story adds up. Do we think its legitimate?

Yes I think so. I remember reading in one of my Beatles books that even they did some backing studio work early on for others, and were paid for it as session musicians. It seems that was the 1960s studio practice.

This was done as a favour for Norman “Hurricane” Smith, as he also looked after Billy Butler.
It was done in 1 take and then Norman took the only existing recording to use it as a possible demo for William “Henry” Butler.
The fact that it also says on the Abbey Road recording Sheet “Taken by Norman Smith on Plastic Spool” also means this was not recorded for full release but just as a demo, because if it is was recorded for a proper release they would have used a 2” master tape, not a plastic spool which is only 1/4” tape and much lesser quality !!! (I was a Studio engineer myself in the 70’s).

Interesting piece of the Pink Floyd history. But, to be a backing band is nothing new or groundbreakig for the Pink Floyd. Dave, Rick and Nick were an effective backing band for Roger Waters between 1977 - 1983. :-;

Is it really Pink Floyd?
For me, the sample is too short to be sure.
And the acetate doesn't mention any details. Only "Earley Morning Henry" (sic) and "Jamarnie Music".

I think all the evidence stacks up from the story on the news page. It would be nice if Nick Mason or one of the others could remember recording it and say something about it. :D

It would be nice if Nick or one of the others purchased the item and then issued a single as part of RSD2021 :-;

I just sent Nick Mason a message on Twitter asking him about it. He probably gets thousands and wont see it/answer it. But you never know.

As well as being in the studio that day recording, they also did a gig in Bath it would seem.

100% Pink Floyd backing as the reference number on this Acetate D 375 complied with the reference number of the Publishing data base (D 375) which stated William “Billy” Butler (Composer, Vocals), Pink Floyd (Backing band), Norman Smith (Producer), Recording Date ( 23rd October 1967), Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Jamarnie Music (publishing copyright), Not released, it also mentionS “No Tape Available” (meaning there was no master tape in the archive) there is no mistaking what this is....even if people’s memories are a bit hazy after 53 years and a lot of mind expanding substances.
