DSOTM in the Billboard charts,.....but for how long and how many times?

Post by DutchFloydian »

First post here, hoping to find someone who can give me the right answer. As browsing through the internet with Google only gives me a lot of different answers.

What am I looking for? I was wondering how long / how often the album Dark Side Of The Moon has been in the US Billboard charts.

I thought that this would be a simple question but I think I have found 278 websites which all give a different answer. So I thought, let's ask the real Pink Floyd fans if they can give me the one and only right answer.

What did I find?
The album entered the Billboard?
I don't know, but it must have been in 1973?
But according to this website it was on 17th March(https://ultimateclassicrock.com/dark-s ... hart-run/)
and according to this website it was on the 29th of April https://www.billboard.com/articles/even ... gh%201988.

So which date was it?

For how many consecutive weeks has it been there?

Is it 741 weeks as this website is telling me https://www.neptunepinkfloyd.co.uk/1973 ... f-the-moon
Or was it 736 weeks after which it left the charts but re-entered it for 5 weeks ? https://ultimateclassicrock.com/dark-s ... chart-run/

Or is it 950 weeks https://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcinty ... 69f1644515

Or could it even be 1.500 weeks ????? https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/ge ... mber%2098.

It could be because English isn't my native language and therefor I don't understand 100% what some websites tell me. But is there anybody out there who can help me?

How long is DSOTM in the Billboard charts? Is that in a consecutive way? Or did it re-enter those charts several times?

Questions, questions, questions. ;-)

From Wikipedia:

The Dark Side of the Moon became one of the best-selling albums of all time[87] and is in the top 25 of a list of best-selling albums in the United States.[45][88] Although it held the number one spot in the US for only a week, it remained in the Billboard album chart for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988.[89][90] [....] It has continued to sporadically appear on the Billboard 200 since then, with the total at 954 weeks on the chart as of January 2021.[98]

To this day, it occupies a prominent spot on Billboard's Pop Catalog Chart. It reached number one when the 2003 hybrid CD/SACD edition was released and sold 800,000 copies in the US.[45] On the week of 5 May 2006 The Dark Side of the Moon achieved a combined total of 1,716 weeks on the Billboard 200 and Pop Catalog charts.[58]

So it seems 741 consecutive weeks on Billboard 200, 954 in total on Billboard 200, and 1716 combined Billboard 200 and Pop Catalog (whatever that is) until 2006...

That's strange,

as on the charts of the 16th of July 1988 the album had position 196 and was in the charts for 736 weeks.

In the charts of the 23th of July 1988 (the week after) the album is not in the charts anymore.

So why does Wiki says it's 741 weeks....

It may get three more weeks when it counts every February 29th (Leap year) during all theese years on the chart? 8)
