Possibly the nearest thing to Pink Floyd currently out there...

Post by ZiggyZipgun »

Nils Frahm, performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2015.

This link skips a brief introduction and a short piano prelude; the next twenty minutes has yet to be named or released, but it covers a lot of ground, and reminds me of Atom Heart Mother and Animals, while not being derivative. I've seen him live twice, and both shows were amazing.

A very talented musician, indeed. I think I can hear a lot of influences here: Mike Oldfield, The Orb, J.M Jarre and a bit of Pink Floyd.

This is tangentially related, but this album might appeal to any fans of On An Island.

John Surman on saxophone, Chris Laurence (who also appears on On An Island and Rattle That Lock) on bass, along with a string quartet. For a jazz artist, the string quartet was considered unusual, but I think it has a lot in common with Pink Floyd's music since it takes that tonality out of the typical jazz context (which I generally can't stand).

Bjørn Riis is certainly extremely Floydian. I note the whole album is on Spotify and I will check it out.

Well, naturally - he created the Gilmourish.com website, formed a Norwegian Pink Floyd tribute band (which may have evolved into Airbag), and now has a solo career, but he's still regularly reviewing different gear for nailing Gilmour's guitar tone.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I doubt he thinks much about him at all. He did think it was a "daft idea" to write a book about his "ordinary" guitar, and has often said that he could walk into any music store, grab a guitar and a couple random pedals, and still sound very much like himself. Plus, with eight children - four of which have sung or played on various records - I think if he wants name a successor, he can just make his own.

From a Gilmour interview in 2015:

Who do you listen to now?
"I always listen to a new Bob, Neil or Leonard record [Dylan, Young, Cohen], but I don’t listen to much new music. When I have the radio on it all sounds dreadfully formularised to me, but I’m not its audience. When you get to sixty-nine you’re not spending every day seeking out new pop music. Obviously there are whole layers of music away from what we get on the radio and telly. It’s like that thing they say about rats: ‘You’re never more than six feet away from a rat in London’; you’re probably never more than a hundred yards from someone doing a great gig somewhere, but I’m just not aware of it. If a new Pink Floyd came along now I wouldn’t know it had happened."

I'd read an article about this guy but forgot to check his music out. Thanks for this reminder. I watched the whole video you posted. Amazing stuff!
