Raise My Rent - familiar riff?

Post by Keith Jordan »

On David Gilmour's self-titled solo album, did he later use that same riff from the opening to write the song What Do You Want From Me from The Division Bell?? He could have wrote a new piece!! :o

But only on the live versions.

And yes the intro part of the solo from Raise My Rent is exactly like WDYWFM, and the intro riff is like the "slow" parts of the song.

I think he quoted "Young Lust" at the end of the live "Learning To Fly" just for a bit of fun, not 'cause he was scatching for ideas. Quite a few musicians throw in little quotes like that. Ritchie Blackmore was always doing that kind of thing.

The riff on Blue Light over London reminds me of Run Like Hell

how can this be?
in his quotes in the Schaffner book Dave says
Rogers the one who keeps reprising the same music with different words
wheras he, Dave, would just as soon use recycle the old lyrics with different music

It was actually Guy Pratt's suggestion to quote Young Lust.

I thought I read that he acknowledged re-using raisemyrent for WDYWFM, I should know lol it also borrows heavily from have a cigar at the beginning.

can someone point me in the direction of the young lust reference in LTF? I am scratching my head.

It's the riff "da du du dudldudl...". Only happens live, right before the breakdown at the end. Comes from "Young Lust" underneath the lines "Oooh baby, set me free".

It was actually Nick who said that.

The Schaffner book came out before Division Bell, but I believe another book relayed but didn't directly quote Gilmour's explanation of "What Do You Want From Me?" coming from them intentionally reworking "Have a Cigar" because they felt it should've been developed further.

Originally, I always though that DG had pinched some riffs from Rory Gallagher on his first album.
'Cry from the street' being a good example!
