The New Machine

Post by David Smith »

Ok, everyone, time for me to voice wha may be a very controversial opinion.

The New Machine (part 1 and 2 collectivly) is actually, THE WORST SONG IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!

What was Dave thinking? It's shite, it's meaningless, it filled 2 tracks on an 11 track album, it was poorly written, bloody irritating, an absolute joke, went on to long, had no tune and ultimatly if Roger had been there then a song that bad would never have been written.

It's an absloute disgrace, and because of that song i lost so much respect for Gilmour. His first chance to outshine Roger, and he wrote that!!! Why?

It's a peice of shit!

No it's not a good song, but hey, when you have written among some of the finest tracks of all time, you can be forgiven for a couple of bad ones.David is still the man.

i like to play aMLoR inthe car a lot,

its a pain in the arse - you have to skip a track to getto Terminal Frost, and then once it finishes you have to skip it again - really irritating when you're driving

and if you're too slow, you get (i like to have my speakers up loud ;)) a really loud "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!" *skip*

f***inghell. (edit: theres no swear filter??!)

i mean, its a joke. a really., really unfunny joke.

oh well

*plays Amused to Death instead*

What exactly is The New Machine?

Is it a pisstake of Welcome To The Machine? Is it another dig at the music business? Is it adressed to Roger Waters? What the f*ck is the machine?

After reading your post I went home and listened to them again a few times and granted they're not on the top of my list but I think they fit the album because all the songs are sort if pieced together and don't really fit with each other. I'm not quite sure what the lyrics are telling me. I always thought it was a reference to the feeling of being stuck doing something or being part of something you don't really want to do. I do like most of songs though, I would vote for "Dogs of war" as the worst song and "Sorrow" as the best followed by "on the turning away.

Is this the way it has always been?
Could it ever have been different?
Do you ever get tired of the waiting?
Do you ever get tired of being in there?

This sounds like a man who needed to move on.

What is it about old topics being resurrected now?

One slip is on my opinion not a masterpiece atall. It's not grossly offensive either, and it's one of the best songs on the album, but that's really not saying much.

I have a habit of over-exaggerating. Exaggerating is the essence of life.

Quite true. Nah, pink floyd's true masterpiece from the post waters era was Lost For Words. Forget all the people who say High Hopes, this song was truelly a masterpiece with Gilmour using his voice to the best extent yet. He sounds so damn good during it. Have i said this before? Yeah probably.
