Dave has got a better voice than Roger IMO.. However I prefer the way Roger sings.
Some of Floyds best work is when their voices combine and contrast in certain songs. The good example is 'The Thin Ice' - Dave sings really smoothly the 'mother loves her baby' bit and Rog comes in with 'if you should go skating' ... sounds soooo cool! Also 'CN' another good example of course.

Excellent point. Roger singing is not easily replaced. David has a great voice, but someone can fill in for him, and it doesn't sound wrong. Every time PF with out Roger plays a song where Roger use to sing (like CN) you can feel the big hole.Feeling Very Pink wrote:T'was good to hear Roger sing his part again for In The Flesh.Neil wrote:Also 'CN' another good example of course.
When I saw Roger on tour, I felt 90% of the songs were just about right on the nose. When I saw Floyd in 94, and felt more line 70% or so. It was still something I will never forget, but it was sad not to see the cranky, egotistical, and sometimes whiny guy there, who really drew me to the band in the 80s.

I think Dave has the better voice, but Roger's was absolutely necessary for certain parts. Can you imagine Dave singing "Night after night, going round and round my brain, his dream is driving me insaaaeeaaeaaaeaaaannnnnnnneee!!!!!" I can't.
On the other hand, I can't imagine Roger singing "Sleepy time, and I lie with my love by my side, and she's breathing low..." Well okay, I can, but it wouldn't have the same peaceful, dreamlike effect.
Both of their voices contributed vital themes to the Pink Floyd sound.

Vocals
David is by far the better singer ("Wish you Were Here"-his shining moment!) .Rick's vocal work on Echoes and on the 2 verses in "Time"
are also noteworthy.(On "Time" his vocals simply "melt" into the
instrumentation...coupled with the background vocals and perhaps some
studio trickery I suppose! .. But Still a great performance nontheless).
Roger's shining moment is definitely the "Animals" Album with
Pigs 3 Different Ones and Sheep. Both Dave's and Roger's vocal
interplay on "Dogs" was Excellent!

I am going to join the fence sitters I think. This is why.
To me david Gilmour has the most beautiful voice in the world. It just makes me melt.
Roger has raw emotion which I also love to hear. Roger can really make me feel the way he feels as soon as he starts singing.
David also has the power to bring out so much emotion while being seemingly emotionless.
Which do I like better?
So here I sit on the fence.

I agree with that statement. Those songs would not sound right with Dave singing them. I think he does a good job on SOYCD though. There are also certain songs that I think Roger shouldn't sing such as WYWH and Time. They just don't sound right when he sings them IMO.MikeWaters wrote:David is the better singer, but i couldnt picture him singing some songs like sheep or pigs(3DO) etc...

Yeah, WYWH just lacked when he sang it. Though i did think his vopice suited Time. Dave on the other hand wouldn't suit songs like TFMH and TSITD so that weighs it out a bit.
Roger definitly has a more aggressive voice while i feel Dave can do heavier songs better. Imagine Roger doing Young Lust or Money.
