Very Sad Indeed

Post by Madshef »

I'm quite shocked and saddened by this news. Syd was the man who began it all for us and left a long and winding legacy. At least now he's at peace with no one with cameras following him or knocking at his door. Shine On Forever, Syd. The Piper has found the Gates Of Dawn at last. :(

I 'd just like to say that the piper at the gates of dawn is a mountain of nostalgia for me ,, as i used to listen to this album in my teens whilst expanding my mind (on my walkman in the great outdoors) and experimenting and generaly growing up and all the things you associate with growing up and learning about life comes flooding back everytime i hear this album ... and i will be listening to all things syd today to pay my respects... with tears in my eyes ... :smt089

i hope the rest of the group will get together soon and pay there respects in a way that only they can !

Poor old Syd.

I'm really sad about this.

Was trying to put a positive spin on things when I heard earlier (a mate's girlfriend works for a satellite news agency) and said "at least he's free of the stalkers and nutters now" but that doesn't really begin to help cover the loss.

I don't think there's anything else I can say. At least he's at peace.

Goodnight sweet and peaceful prince. Thank you for all that you have given us. And apologies if we took too much from you in the giving. You're music will live on.

To me the most appropriate song of his to post on a day like this, though certainly not his most beautiful, is the poignant:

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear
That I'm not here.
And I never knew the moon could be so big
And I never knew the moon could be so blue
And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes
And brought me here instead dressed in red
And I'm wondering who could be writing this song.

I don't care if the sun don't shine
And I don't care if nothing is mine
And I don't care if I'm nervous with you
I'll do my loving in the winter.

And the sea isn't green
And I love the queen
And what exactly is a dream?
And what exactly is a joke?

Rest in peace Roger Barrett.

Personally, I'd prefer a picture of Syd the way we remember him - the guy from Pink Floyd. His gaunt look on that photo is just sad to look at now...

"He was the first guy I'd heard to sing pop or rock with a British accent - his impact on my thinking was enormous" David Bowie about Syd Barrett

He taught many of us non-English the English language. I knew all the lyrics from Piper by heart and learned the meaning of the beutiful words.

No. It has another picture too, it just shows him as he was. It is not distasteful in the slightest.

Why should it be distasteful? It's how he looked.

It's obviously a "stalker-photo", though; Syd never gave his consent for them to take that picture.
