Photos of Syd Barrett's House and Road

Post by Keith Jordan »

Here are some photos that Wendy Bannister kindly sent me upon me requesting she take some if she was in the area!! They are of Syd Barrett's former house at number 6 St Margaret's Square in Cambridge, England.

I thought it would be of interest to display them on NPF for those curious to see where he lived his normal life.

That's pretty big for one person. It's nice to see the "windows bricked over" rumor is false, as well.

There's something inexplicably funny about that bright blue door on an otherwise-standard old house. I wonder if RKB did that; it is a rather fun Syd-ism.

It's surreal really.
How many of us would have loved to have wandered down that street when he was alive just to catch a glympse of the man.
Nice pictures and thanks for putting them up. :D

I have often wondered where he lived and what his street looked like!! I think these photos will help convey his suster Rosemary's thoughts that Roger Barrett wasnt some mental recluse living in a house with boarded up windows etc!! Just a normal house, in a normal road, in a normal university town!

Great seeing the photos.
Although in one photo, the house door is brown instead of blue and I think it was shot in around the same time. I guess they changed the door..

Or maybe it was one of those instance where RKB woke up one day and said "You know what? This would be awesome of it was blue."

That's kind of why I envy him. Not many people have the kind of dedication and energy to muse about what stuff looks like and then get up and change it. I wish I could do that.

Nice to see he kept the lawn tidy, apparently he gardened quite a bit.

Having spent half the afternoon sawing down most of a big tree that must be a triffid in disguise, I think form the amount of swearing I did my neighbours already think I'm madder than Syd. Plus my garden is 100 times more neglected, and I haven't had the courage to paint my door.

RKB was still saner than most of us!

So... was Syd's house actually the end unit of a large complex? Is that what I'm seeing? If so, it would be great to talk to the person who shares that adjoining wall and get some stories.

He lived in a semi-detached house meaning two houses joined together at one wall to make construction cheaper!!

It may be a bit obsessive to speak to his neighbour!! :o :)
