Big congrats. to the big man!

He really is 'establishment' now (if he accepts, of course). :D

An archaic British reward for services to Queen & country (or music, in this case) - Commander of the British Empire (such that it is these days).

Afraid not, DG would need a KBE or above to be addressed as 'Sir'.
Here's a brief description of the rank structure:

Order of the British Empire

Date Created:- 1917
Levels:- Post Nominal Letters:-
Grand Cross GBE
Knight/Dame KBE/DBE
Companion/Commander CBE
Officer OBE
Member MBE

Remarks:-
Available to all who give service in the United Kingdom. It also has a medal, the British Empire Medal, which has not been used in the United Kingdom since 1993.

I can second that sentiment.

Does anyone know of all the rock musicians that have had an order (is that the term?) bestowed upon them?

Off the top of my head I can think of Jagger, McCartney, Elton John, Bob Geldoff, The Beatles (Lennon gave his back, right?), but I'm sure there must be others.

I guess that last year when Jagger got his, Keith Richards was jealous, but Jagger said something to the effect that he (Richards) would have refused it anyway.

I couldnt agree more! I wonder just how much the ceremony cost?

I dont think these awards are any kind of achievement anyway, given the huge amount of people that are 'honoured' each year then its really only a matter of time before anyone who has any sort of celebrity status will receive an award.

Stu
Off to the bookies to put a fiver on Timmy Mallet for next year!

At first, this comment angered me, but then I thought about it and realised how very right you are. Oooohhh, hurrah, he's a CBE! Good for him, I'm sure he's very glad. Pilot is very right. So many people get awarded for this that it's really not as big a deal as so many people make it seem. And I'm a huge fan of Dave too.

The vast majority of people who get awards are not celeb's most of are just people who've performanced some service to the community. Do they say what dave is being honoured for? I think theres a good chance it could be down to his charity work in the last few years and not his musical contribution which if they were going to honour they would have some time ago.

It says on the BBC site that Dave received his award for ''services to music''. Im sure no one here will contest that, his charity work does get a mention but its not mentioned in the area that states what the award was for. The big problem i have with these awards is the way the media deals with them, for example David Beckhams award makes the front pages and some guy who gives up everything he owns and leaves his relatives behind to work in some foreign country to help save starving and war-torn families doesnt even get a mention in the press even tho they receive a much more deserved accolade. Sorry but the media really pi**es me off sometimes. (in fact nearly all the time)

Thanks for the info.

I read that former 007 Roger Moore was knighted recently.
