Thanks, bpmolder. You are right as usual. I am getting a little dramatic. It is a pretty stimulating thread, though!
Lostplay... I don't need a seperate thread. I will stay on topic or stay off the forum. I didn't want to start a whole new topic for Ween because noone here gives a damn about them and that's cool. There are WAY too many bands out there. I gotta admit that I did enjoy the heated discussion. It was cathartic.
....and what exactly is a joke?
A line in Jugband Blues...

that is what I love about people that appreciate Syd Barrett. They can have a healthy, heated discussion without getting nasty and vindictive.
A big fat beautiful NINE to you guys.

Right on. Allow me to steer you toward the Ween recordings Quebec or White pepper. Their early stuff is very lo fi and goofy and certain people might hate it and write the band off. The newest is La Cucaracha but it is VERY eclectic and probably not the best place to start. There is a lot of parody in their music, too and it certainly is not for a mass audience. Tons of their live shows are available for free on their website- Ween.com.

Re: A line in Jugband Blues...
I always took this song to have meaning on multiple levels, but mostly sarcasm and sadness on the part of old Syd directed towards his bandmates and life in general. maybe his most cynical moment. a very personal and tragic song which perhaps also comments on the high ideals of the Summer of Love. I can't help but see some relation to the Beatles Day in the Life structurally. perhaps Syd recognized the euphoria of late 60's idealism as being hollow a few years before many. still, sarcasm seems clear. almost an acceptance of self and equally an indictment of those around him
interpetation of lines follows:
thanks for thinking about me (really, thanks a lot)
and thanks for making it obvious that i've lost my mind (and really, i appreciate you pointing this out)
i never knew crazy insight would loom so large (lunar, lunacy, moon is big)
and i never knew crazy insight would lead to this sadness (moon is blue)
thanks for throwing away my unacceptable dirty crumpled clothes
and bringing me to the Top of the Pops dressed in this red finery (acting and behaving like a good star)
Who do you think is writing this song anyway, if I'm crazy and not here?
I dont care if there is no sun and it's cold
I dont care if i have nothing
I dont care if i feel nervous in your company
I'll do my loving in the cold season of winter (acceptance of fate)
of course the sea isn't green (not like Ringo sings in Yellow Submarine, that's all fanciful)
i still love the Queen like any good English bloke
what is a dream? (something wished for)
what is a joke? (a dream not attained)

Good one
Unfortunately, he didn't write a lyric that would mean "Please help me"
