In my mind Ummagumma is some kind of treshold in whole Pink Floyd story .
If you can get into this album, and if you like it, you are then really a Pink Floyd fan!
It's not easiest album to get into, true. But once when it grows on you, you will like it for rest of your life, man!
It's weird album, but it's in the same time the triumf of Pink Floyd experimentation! Great work.

Ummagumma's a bit uneven IMHO but it does have some pointers for the direction in which the band would go. Especially Roger and David's contributions. The Narrow Way Part 3 is very "Floydian" to my ears and like a dry run for something off Dark Side of the Moon. Roger's Grantchester Meadows is a nice guitar ballad in the vein of "If" (though I prefer the version he and David performed on KQED etc). As for the Several Species of Furry Animals...well it may not be pleasing to everyone's ears but it is an early experiment with tape loops.

I'm tempted to go back and listen to the original "Sysyphus" again, having just heard the 'extended mix' from "Ummagumma Revisited" that adds, among other bits and bobs, "The Violent Sequence" (badly spliced in) and a backwards rendition of "Several Species" into the mix. Very odd.
'The Narrow Way Pt. 2' definitely goes on the list of songs that freak me the hell out. That and "Julia Dream".
The cover alone is worth buying!! The "Live " side is fantastic, especially on a top-notch stereo!!
I like Gilmour's "The Narrow Way" but you can have the rest fo the solo stuff.
I recently got the album and I'm loving it. I listened to it a while back and didn't really like it, but after a recent listen, I'm now really into it.
My fave songs are Sysyphus part III and The Narrow Way part II.

If I'm not mistaken it's not Gilmour, right?
I always thought it was... But then that may be because i couldn't imagine who else would have done it.
