Re: Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
I think Schaffner ruined this album for me, cuz in his book he explains that the band left the country before the orchestra was hired, and the different bits where the band played were at different tempos and different keys, meaning the orchestra had to do some tricky stuff to make the transitions
ever since reading that Ive been conscious of a queasy seasick feeling whenever I notice the orchestra seems to be slowing down and changing direction, like when a ferry is trying to position itself to dock on rough water
how do folks think the Suite ranks against other orchestra/rock hybrids?
Ive been listening to Grace Slicks Theme from the (fictitious) Movie "Manhole" lately, which according to the liner notes was recorded in a similar way
Grace and her backing band recorded their bits, then one of her employees hired an orchestra to overdub it
personally Im liking her attempt better, perhaps because of the influence she's trying to emulate: whereas the Floyds seem to be going for Wagnerian pomp, Grace Slick was a fan of the Miles Davis/Gil Evans arrangement of Concierto de Aranjuez

It's better than the studio version of Terrapin by the Dead.J Ed wrote:how do folks think the Suite ranks against other orchestra/rock hybrids?

One of my favorites, and the predecessor of what was to come... I gave it a 4

I've got the recent (Cadogan Theatre, Chelsea, 2008) live performance of AHM Suite with Ron Geesin and Dave Gilmour and it's actually pretty good. Anyone else listened to this yet?

Good and important Pink Floyd album, but not their best.

I gave it 1 for the song Fat Old Sun. I don't think the title track really works. I don't like it at all. The rest of it just stinks. Glad I never wasted my money on this.

So THIS is why Gilmour called it Theme From an Imaginary Western! right?
Waters thought it sounded like the Magnificent Seven theme, but I find this one A LOT more similar to AHM.
The band certainly had that "soundtrack gene" well rooted in their musical DNA

Re: Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
Of all the albums between Piper and Momentary Lapse, is this the album with the least input from Roger? The music if not the arrangement of the title track is supposedly mostly Dave and Rick's, and ASB sounds like their music too. Roger wrote only one of the three remaining songs.
I've really grown to love this album in recent years. Summer 68 is my favourite track, and probably my favourite Rick song. Fat Old Sun's great too. I love the title track, but I think I prefer the Amazing Pudding version done on KQED.
