You have a good point, and I think first time listeners should listen to the album the traditional way.
But for me, starting the album off with the 2nd disc makes for a more memorable experience. I think every Floyd fan should try it at least once.

why limit yourself to 2 cds?
try it with vinyl, you can do:
side 1,2,3,4
side 1,2,4,3
side 1,3,2,4
side 1,3,4,2
side 1,4,2,3
side 1,4,3,2
side 2,1,3,4
side 2,1,4,3
side 2,3,1,4
side 2,3,4,1
side 2,4,1,3
side 2,4,3,1
side 3,1,2,4
side 3,1,4,2
side 3,2,1,4
side 3,2,4,1
side 3,4,1,2
side 3,4,2,1
side 4,1,2,3
side 4,1,3,2
side 4,2,1,3
side 4,2,3,1
side 4,3,1,2
side 4,3,2,1
you should give us a comparitive report on each one of those experiences cuz each one would also be unique, and probably at least one permutation has never been tried before by anybody ever, maybe as many as 23 alternate versions of The Wall have never before been heard!

One variation is quite enough for me thank you!

Jack's interpretation is interesting-- not that I'd listen to the parts in said order, but it does reveal a different angle alright.

I just love the guitar solo in Thin Ice. The first side is super amazing anyhow.

Really got back into this album before and subsequently since Roger's O2 gig .. The fact that he can still tour it - completely unchanged - but with an updated message with its relevance to today, for me , makes it timeless and not in the slightest dated.. If Roger lived to be 200 I'm sure it would still be as relevant then as well..

Not only will the music live on forever, but also its ability to provoke thought

I haven't posted in this thread, and feel this poem I wrote today sums up my feelings.

PINK FLOYD THE WALL 1979

Pink Floyd The Wall 1979
And I was a child
A future assured
Kept on eating cola cubes
Older brother bought the single
The b-side held more curiosity
"One Of My Turns"

I remember the Christmas single
And the record label art
My collection was only one record
And a couple of others already owned
Was more into collecting
Star Wars figures and toys
Pink Floyd The Wall 1979

It bided it's time for me
Waited and lingered
I was a child
Devastated by 1982
If I'd seen the movie
I would not have been confused

But in those days
There were few with video recorders
And those that did
Kept quiet about it
No internet or greater media

They were too interested in Rocky films
None of my thought as friends
Smuggled The Wall film to me
Yes, Alien photonovel
But please! Don't bring the monkey mask!
Pink Floyd The Wall 1979

Roger Waters in Berlin during 1990
That was considerable turning point
I only saw the second half
And thought Roger Waters had put on weight
At the Knebworth show after with Pink Floyd...

My oldest friend
When I visited
Was delighted in The Wall I was interested
But lent me the film
On VHS
Before the album played
More was to start
Sectarian side of Waters/Gilmour taken
Pink Floyd The Wall 1979

It was bought out as a live album
But in 2000 I had a girl
And didn't think I was that person any more
Over a decade later
And I am now alone
With a copy of Pink Floyd The Wall 1979

Roger Waters is playing it live
And I have nobody or means to go?
Except back to Pink Floyd
The Wall 1979

It's actually pretty darn good though not the album that made me fan at all. I am a Syd guy, but I like the Floyd in the seventies very much. Still of those seventies albums this is a bit harder to play all the way through for me. Not because there is filler but because it takes so much out of me.
I do enjoy it far more than I did before.

I'm with you on that. Even though "Empty Spaces" is great, I love that tune far more.
Do not complain anymore. Here came the full version of the album:

It's not quite the full thing. There is a longer version of Young Lust that certain radio stations have. At least in Winnipeg, there is.

On the other hand, Foot In The Door, for some reason, has a very clipped version

Unfortunately that's the pay-off when record companies try to compile "Best of" albums for bands whose songs were on the longer side. I could never figure out why they bothered putting Marooned on Echoes seeing as the intro was barely over when they cut it short.

Speaking of epic tracks... I also wonder why did they use the intro to Shine On quite a few times on FITD.
