I don't hate this as much as other Pink Floyd fans do. It's not a masterpiece by any means but a few of the tracks from this I do listen to. Not the Dogs of War though - it's a horrible track.
It is a good album, but those A New Machine tracks and One Slip make me think "what the hell was Gilmour thinking?". The 80's production never pleased me either.
First Floyd "as a dinosaur" album in my opinion. Totally irrelevant and unnecesary. A mere comercial product with a couple of nice bits of music inserted here and there. Great cover though.
Actually the opening instrumental Signs of Life is pretty nice too
One Slip i can listen to aswell (and that's only the vocal performance on an otherwise poor song)
But little else
A New Machine through Terminal Frost (the most boring track ever written) to A New Machine part 2 is probably my least favourite run of songs from any Pink Floyd album. Stunningly bad. If i was Gilmour i would have thought twice about making this my first album in charge of Pink Floyd as it simply doesn't compare to any of the back catelogue barring perhaps the studio part of Umma Gumma. The album just sounds far too periodic and very unfloydian. I'm glad Dave followed it up or we'd have this monstrosity of an album as the final piece in the band's career
Aw I love this album but I suppose it's because it's the first one I heard. Always play it right to the end when I listen to it. Nothing wrong with New Machine to my ears but it's not the best song on the album.
