I like Damo Suzuki in Can. He realised that the vocals did not have to be words so much as the right noise for the music. Before complex studio engineering bands like Can seem to have been hell bent on stacking up the musicians into their own little sonic layers with as much room to breathe as possible. I guess thats why Tago Mago is still loved as much as it is in some circles.

Other great frontmen in my list: James Hetfield, Fred Durst, Robbie Williams, Michael Stipe... It's a different type of performance, isn't it? It's not enough to be a good singer - you have to capture the attention of the crowd for most of the show. Freddie could do that, easily. He was the greatest. If you don't believe me just watch the Live Aid show, where he performed to a packed Wembley Stadium, filled with mostly non-Queen fans. Better yet, watch Live in Rio where the audience was quarter of a million.

Speaking of which - Paul Rodgers turned out to be a surprisingly good frontman. While fronting Queen he performed to an audience of over 300 000 Ukrainians. That takes brass balls.

Mick Jagger. Keith Richards says Mick could get up and 'work' a table. He could get the audience going in a tiny club or a huge hall. He just knows how to work a crowd rather than be at odds with it.

Have you seen him perform? He can really draw in and audience. But without all the ego of a Mercury or Jagger. One of the shows I saw him at, he jumped off the stage, while the band jammed away, and hugged every single person in the audience before leaping back up on the stage. He had us eating out of the palm of his hand at that point. It was just electrifying. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
